  • SCHS Girls golf team on a roll with 9-0 record

    The eyes of the golfing world will be on Louisville’s Valhalla Golf Club this week for the 2008 Ryder Cup, but the Spencer County Girls golf team is making news of their own with a perfect 9-0 mark going into the final weeks of the season.

    On Monday, the girls outshot the squad from Fort Knox, posting a 189-247 win over the visitors at Tanglewood Golf Course. It was the Lady Bears’ ninth straight victory and coach Luke Penrod said team balance has been one huge key to their success.

  • VFW And Ladies Auxiliary essay contest

    It is once again time to set your thinking caps on and start working on your essay to have the opportunity to win a $30,000 or $10,000 scholarship. There are two essay contests. Applications may be picked up at the Spencer Magnet, the High School, or the Middle School.

  • Punt, pass and kick competition

    The Spencer County Middle School Grizzly football team will be hosting a NFL Punt, Pass and Kick tournament Sunday, Sept. 28., at the high school field.

    The event is free to all boys and girls ages 8 through 15. The winner of the competition will be eligible to move on to sectional competitions and could eventually compete at half time during a Cincinnati Bengals game.

    Registration for the local competition begins at 2 p.m. with the tournament beginning at 3 p.m. Parents must be present to sign permission forms. Concessions will be sold at the event.

    As we all know, times are tough. Caught by the rising costs of fuel, food and housing, many families have trouble making their diminishing dollars stretch far enough.

    Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Department responded to a barn fire in the 3000 block of Love Lane Sunday evening around 6 p.m. Chief Nathan Nation said the 20x16 metal structure had no electricity running to it and that hay, a tractor and some small farm machinery inside were destroyed.   • SCMS holds on to first place spot: SCMS 34, St. Charles 0

    Spencer County Middle School Grizzly Football was able to move ahead in their conference play last Tuesday with a win over St. Charles Middle School in Marion County.

     

    From the opening play, the Grizzlies would show the Knights that they were overmatched. On SCMS's third play from scrimmage, tailback Jordan Hardin scored his first touchdown of the night with a 48 yard run. Zack Smith was able to nail the PAT kick and with less than a minute gone in the game Spencer County was in the lead 8-0.

  • LETTER: Littering is a violation of freedom

    Big burger bags, water bottles, empty ice bags, and other garbage and litter still invade our county on a daily basis. As citizens of a democracy, we have freedom of speech, with life and liberty thrown in as a bonus. What we oft times forget, our freedoms are restricted to the point of not infringing on the freedoms and rights of others around us.
