  • LETTER: Reader would welcome decision to stop using coal ash

    Thank you for printing the letter to the editor entitled, “Coal ash isn’t best option,” in your Feb. 6 edition.
    I agree with Dave Barnes concerning the problems with using coal ash on our streets.
    The county does a great job with snow removal and brine applications and I’m very happy with those efforts. The decision to stop using coal ash would be most welcomed.

  • LETTER: Slow down on Elk Creek Road

    I have recently moved to Spencer County in the Elk Creek Road area. Since moving in, my husband and I have noticed that there seems to be some issues with people speeding. The speed limit is 45 mph, but from the stop light in Elk Creek to the church on Elk Creek Road, there are some who feel the need to go faster.
    This is increased on the weekends because neighbors and myself believe drivers think law enforcement may be more lax than on the busier street.

  • LETTER: Thank you, Spencer County fire department

    This is a thank you to the Spencer County volunteer fire department for all their efforts in containing the fire at our farmhouse on Overlook Road on Jan. 22.
    Without your help, we might have also lost livestock, hay and barns.
    This was a job well done by many highly trained young men in a very cold early morning fire. I can’t thank you enough.
    Also thanks to a local restaurant for food and hot drinks and just a lot of emotional support. Without the help of friends, where would we be?

  • LETTER: Nursing home visits can lift your spirits

    On Feb. 20, 1993, I took a walk down memory trail. I went to the nursing home in Taylorsville and I would like to say to the people who dread facing another day and don’t have anything to smile about — just walk into that nursing home and in a few minutes if you can’t find something to smile about, then you are in worse shape that those people in the nursing home.

  • LETTER: Thanks all around for candy buy-back success

    We wanted to say thanks for the many people who participated in our 4th annual candy buy-back “Treats for our Troops” event.
    I know it can be hard to give up your hard earned candy, but your teeth and our troops say “thank you.”
    We even included toothbrushes and toothpaste in each box to keep our troop’s teeth healthy.
    Special thanks go out to the Henrichs family and Jackson Ransdell for their creativity and help.
    Thanks also are due to the wonderful staff of The Spencer Magnet for their community interest and support.

  • LETTER: Kudos to the county road department

    I would like to bring to our community’s attention the Spencer County Road Department and the help they have been. My hat’s off to all the road department’s staff and the hard work that goes with being a part of the task in keeping our roads drivable, especially the way our weather has been the past several years.
    This last freezing weather really told the story about their work and the effort that goes forth in helping us get our kids to school as safe as possible.

  • LETTER: Dodge over Ford?

    In reference to the article last week noting that Fiscal Court had approved two Dodge trucks for the Sheriff’s Office — a large portion of Chrysler is now owned by the Italian company Fiat. Chrysler is not even considered an American company by many these days because of the purchase by Fiat.
    I understand Ford is not currently building a “police package” so the Chrysler cars I see running about town are understandable.

  • LETTER: ‘Coal ash’ isn’t best option

    I would like to ask the citizens of Spencer County if they agree with the road department spreading coal ash on our roads.
    It tracks onto my driveway and into my garage and house. It washes off the roads and pollutes the streams and lakes. When it’s dry, the traffic kicks up dust.
    I do appreciate them brine treating and plowing. I believe coal ash is a hazardous material. I would rather deal with the snow than black ash.

  • LETTER: The last word

    Shelby Tyler Smith always had to have the last word in any conversation that he was involved in.  He was a compassionate, caring, loving young man whose whole entire life revolved around serving the Lord.
    He touched the lives and hearts of many and we will miss him very much until the day we are reunited with him in the kingdom of heaven.  If Shelby could have one conversation with the people that he had never met, I believe with all my heart that it would start with one question, “Have you asked Jesus Christ into your heart?”
