  • LETTER: Thanks for help with this year’s Health Fair/Readifest

To this year’s Spencer County community participants, the Spencer County Family Resource and Youth Service Center would like to thank everyone who made the Health Fair/Readifest event so successful on Saturday, Aug. 6, at Spencer County High School.
Our sponsors for this year were: Spencer County Cooperative Extension Office, Publishers Printing, Jewish Hospital of Shelbyville, Spencer County Health Department, and Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency.

  • LETTER: Civil Air Patrol memories from 9/11

In the late afternoon of Sept. 11, 2001, the most crowded skies of the world became silent. There were no high streaks of contrails mixing with clouds. The ever present life-saving chatter of air traffic controllers ceased. A kind of strange eerie void had restored the heavens to its pristine past. Nothing man-made moved in the skies above the United States.
Nothing, except a single small airplane lifting in the late afternoon from Bowman Field en route to the New York area with rare and precious medical supplies.

  • Magnet staff share 9/11 memories

Editor’s Note: With the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States coming up this weekend, Spencer Magnet staff members were asked to share their memories from that tragic day.

Sept. 11, 2001, started out as a typical Tuesday morning at The Spencer Magnet office.  As typical as a production day can be at a newspaper.

  • COLUMN: City website is step in right direction

It’s no secret that we here at The Spencer Magnet are in favor of open government.
We champion just about anything that increases the amount of information the taxpayers get to know about their government.
And let me remind you, taxpayers, it is your government. The money in the city, county, state, etc., bank accounts no more belongs to those who decide how to spend it than it belongs in my personal checking account.

  • COLUMN: County gets ‘rolling recycling center’

We have wrapped up the Summer Roadside Litter Abatement Drive, and I thank one and all who helped give our roadsides a good cleaning. As in the past, we will have a final cleanup in the fall during the last week of October and the first week of November. Watch the paper for final instructions.

  • COLUMN: Discoveries from an Indian excursion

There is a quote I’ve always loved that, if memory serves me, was born in the mind of Jalal al-Din Rumi, the greatest Sufi thinker: You are raw until you travel – until you bring yourself into the world and join yourself with existence; then you are cooked.

  • LETTER: Family says thanks for Habitat, community support

To Habitat for Humanity of Spencer County and members of my community – I can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate everything you have done for my family. You have given my family something that I thought would never be possible – a home.
All of your hard work, dedication, sacrifice and care will never be forgotten. You have given my family hope of a better tomorrow.
I want to thank all the board members for working feverishly to pull all of this together and supporting me through this whole process.
