  • LETTER: Salute our community heroes

When we think of heroes, we often think of the bravery shown by firefighters, policemen, soldiers and the citizen who jumps in Taylorsville Lake to save a drowning child. They are truly heroes.
But I have in mind another kind of hero: the heroes who show love and compassion to the elderly and disabled who need help with daily care, special training to regain strength and functioning, intensive medical monitoring, and/or mental stimulation. Mostly, they need love, attention, respect and unconditional positive regard.

  • COLUMN: Hi, Spencer County, nice to meet you

Two people, aside from my parents, earn credit for the way I’ve turned out as a young adult — and they’re probably not two people you’d expect.
Who are those people? My best friend’s father and a former youth pastor/current friend.
As a child, I was very shy and perfectly content huddling up in a corner and watching whatever events were before me unfold. At birthday parties or general gatherings of friends and family, I was much more the observer than the participant.

  • COLUMN: Celebrate Newspapers in Education

What has a newspaper given you this week? Some useful information about your local government? A weather report, crossword puzzle, or a heartwarming story about triumph over tragedy? Perhaps a newspaper has supplied a great recipe idea or a fun fact about your community. Hopefully it has even helped spur you to action or helped you make a difficult decision about an issue affecting your community.
If a newspaper can give its adult readers all of those things, imagine the learning opportunities it could give a student in our local schools.

  • LETTER: Thanks from the basketball team

On behalf of the Spencer County High School boys’ varsity basketball team and coaching staff, I would like to thank Dairy Queen of Taylorsville for hosting the meet-and-greet following our 30th District Championship win. Manager Bob Gill and his staff are to be commended for their continued support of Spencer County athletics.

  • LETTER: Believe in the Bears

Too often we read of nothing but negativity in our community. We have lived in Spencer County for nearly 13 years, but here recently there has been a surge of community like I have never seen before in Spencer County supporting our Bears basketball team. Community members are rallying behind each other. I know some may say it is only a basketball game, but it is much more than that.

  • LETTER: Brock will become ‘part of the community’
  • LETTER: Thanks to judge-executive

I would like to thank Bill Karrer for taking over the budget of the county clerk. The fees collected by this department from the residents of Spencer County should be used for the good of the entire county, not for the benefit of the county clerk and staff.
