  • COLUMN: Main Street streetscape project should start soon

A couple of weeks ago, your Historic Taylorsville Main Street Committee shared the exciting news that the long awaited Phase II Streetscape project was about to begin. The section of Main Street from the Courthouse to Jefferson Street is beginning a face-lift effort that will not only increase our pride for our beautiful town, but improve the economic viability of our downtown.

  • LETTER: A message to elected officials

Those of you who are elected officials of Taylorsville have been chosen to represent us, the citizens of Taylorsville. We are counting on you to be a voice for us concerning all issues that may affect us.

  • LETTER: McConnell column was ‘party rhetoric’

Form letters not allowed? Mitch McConnell’s reaction to Obamacare is a form letter.
It is the Republican Party rhetoric or speaking points. Mitch McConnell’s statement “common-sense,” step-by-step reforms, is the RNC’s speaking points. The only problem they can’t figure out is which foot to take the first step with. In other words, they have no plan.
As far as tax hikes, the taxes under the Obama Administration are the lowest in 30 years.

  • COLUMN: Cancer touches everyone, everywhere

When I was 10 years old, or maybe 9, my grandmother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I didn’t know what that meant. I just knew she got really sick, really fast.
On January 21, 1995, I lost the last of my living grandparents to this ugly disease. I remember my mom getting the phone call to come to the hospital in a hurry. I remember my dad carrying me into my great aunt’s house. I remember pretending to be asleep when my great aunt Bonnie got the call that her sister had died.

  • LETTER: Thanks for ‘giving hope’

  • LETTER: Lapp’s columns are ‘excellent’; marriage is commitment-centered

I want to applaud  Dr. John Lapp’s articles that appear in our Magnet. Each one is excellent.
With my 35 years in the field of mental heath and 58 years of marriage (with eight children), I feel my judgment is more that just a casual opinion regarding his last column on love and marriage.

  • COLUMN: ‘Pet Idol’ is more than a contest

As you may have noticed, we have quite the contest going on right now. The 2012 Pet Idol contest boasts a total of over $875 in prizes — not to mention you get to see your pretty little pets in the paper each week through Aug. 8. And while we enjoy seeing all of your cute critters, I feel it’s necessary to remind you of the seriousness that fuels this contest.
All money raised during this year’s contest goes toward our Newspapers in Education program, which places newspapers in the classrooms in our schools.

  • LETTER: With Chuck Adams, our schools’ future is bright

As a former student, teacher, school administrator and school board member, our school system has always been a source of pride. Things have not always been as they should, but currently things could not be better, nor could the system be in better hands because of its leadership.
With Superintendent Chuck Adams receiving the state’s highest leadership award, “The Spirit of Leadership,” each and every parent and citizen should take great comfort in the fact that our system is headed in the right direction.
