  • LETTER: Get to know Taylorsville Place before making ‘ignorant’ comments

I am writing this in response to The Spencer Magnet article from Oct. 5, back page, “Citizens heard at public hearing.” I am a resident of Taylorsville Place, and have lived there since August. As everyone else that lives in Taylorsville Place Apartments, I went through a very lengthy and detailed screening process in order to qualify to become a resident. It was all worth it in the end because now I get to enjoy living in a very well-managed, beautiful community.

  • LETTER: Keep rallying to support Backpack Buddies

I have to say how wonderful this community is and how you guys really come through when someone is in need. We hosted a food drive on Saturday to help support the “Backpack Buddy Program” at our local schools. This program feeds our local children, in need, over the weekend, and for every weekend until school is out.
The success of this food drive was due to the awesome support of our community, volunteers and local businesses. I would like to say thank you so much for recognizing this need and wanting to fill it.

  • LETTER: Thanks to Marksbury for creating ‘magic’

Many thanks to Coach Mike Marksbury and Jim Beavers for sending us to “Disney World” Friday night at the SCHS Homecoming football game.
Coach Marksbury became our new Walt Disney and made a dream come true at the game Friday night.
Our son, Clint, is a senior on the varsity football team and has played football in this county since A.J. Waldridge founded the Stallions League. His senior year brings to these parents many emotions as our youngest child brings to a close his education in this county, and football has been a huge part of his education.

  • Celebrating National Newspaper Week

This week, National Newspaper Week, some of our staff members reflect on what newspapers – The Spencer Magnet, in particular – mean to them.

We value highly our readers and the folks in Spencer County, and we are the only local news medium whose sole interest is to showcase Spencer County and mark its history for generations to follow.

  • LETTER: Smoke alarm safety tips

Does everyone in your home know what the smoke alarm sounds like? Did you remove the batteries when they started chirping instead of replacing them? If it did sound, would you know what to do?
Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District is teaming up with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association during October 9-15 to let our community know: “It’s Fire Prevention Week. Protect your Family from Fire!”

  • LETTER: Clerk’s audit, responses are ‘embarrassing’

The issuance of a qualified opinion by State Auditor Crit Luallen regarding apparent inappropriate financial and accounting practices of the Spencer County Clerk’s Office is extremely disconcerting. As both an auditor and a Spencer County resident, I am disappointed that taxes paid to the county may have been misused in such a flagrantly egregious manner.

  • COLUMN: Sifting the trash – learning to ‘can it,’ not ‘toss it’

I want to begin this article with an illustration of unity and cooperation to accomplish a goal.
Saturday night (Sept. 24) was the Progressive Dinner as promoted and served by the business community of Main Street in Taylorsville.
From start to finish, from beginning to end, all events went in perfect order. What we were served at each stop was delicious, be it appetizer to dessert. The hosts and hostesses and all involved were professional to the T.

  • COLUMN: End of the beginning, or beginning of the end?

We members of the solid waste and recycling field team learn a lot from our peers and the other areas of government. Studies are made on a regular basis pertaining to the general condition of and the functioning of our various infrastructure units.
