  • LETTER: Good old boys at work again

(Editor’s note: This letter was read into record at the Jan. 3 Fiscal Court meeting).

My name is Carmin Gaines and I am a resident of Spencer County, and I was born and raised here.  I own businesses in this county, and I’m the Chair of the Spencer County Democratic party.

I’m here today to address Judge Karrer.  Judge, while running for the position of Spencer Co. Judge-Executive, you had stated that if you were elected, you would make appointments for jobs in the county based on experience and qualifications.

  • LETTER: Thanks to our school board members

As a citizen of Spencer County, I’m extremely proud of the students and teachers, the administrators and the service workers who are the heart and soul of the Spencer County School System. And I’m also proud of the district leadership this community has put in place through the members of the Spencer County Board of Education.

Jeanie Stevens, Scott Travis, Mary Ann Carden, Sandy Clevenger and Shannon Medley aren’t just elected officials. They are employers, friends, family members and in every way an important part of the fiber of our community.

  • To record or not to record . . . there is no question: Record

With the type of blazing speed that would have made the legendary racehorse Secretariat proud, the Spencer County Fiscal Court yanked the curtains shut on one window of transparency for the new edition of our local government body.

The court, with only new magistrate Jerry Davis dissenting, stealthily approved a motion on Jan. 3 to stop its own videotaping – and recording in general – of its meetings.

  • Former magistrate thanks community

Many thoughts come to mind while looking back at the last 12 years. roads, parks, water projects, floods, snow storms, ice, and yes, even the thought of an airport.

Friends and neighbors simply look for someone to talk to for a while in a time of need. As magistrate, I took all of these personal. Together, we developed a relationship with one another and worked hard for our county.

Over the last few months, I have received many wonderful phone calls and e-mails of support. I appreciate these.

  • Reader thinks deputies acted childish

The Spencer Magnet recently reported that two deputies will be leaving post. I personally feel that the two deputies that claim to love their county, should want to keep their jobs and help the new sheriff as much as possible.

Steve Coulter was an outstanding sheriff, no one can take that from him. But Mr. Stump did win. I feel that Buddy Stump will also make an outstanding sheriff.

  • Reader upset over dispatch issues

I would like to share what happened to a family member of mine on Thursday morning, Dec. 23, 2010.

My sister who works in the Critical Care Unit at Baptist East Hospital was on her way to work at 5:30 a.m. in the morning with her three children. She was taking them to her mother in laws, when she struck a deer on Highway 155. Obviously, she was upset but she took the time to check the children and herself before calling 911 to have a police officer come and take a report.

As everyone is aware we have changed dispatching services to Frankfort State Police post.

  • COLUMN: A year of blessings in 2010

    By DOUG MARTIN, Religion Columnist

I recently overheard two individuals talking about Christmas. In their conversation, one explained that they were not going to have a big Christmas this year because things had been kind of rough around their house. I was sad to hear of their hardship but I was reminded that in life we all face rough times. What has 2010 been like for you?
