Today's Opinions

  • LETTER: How about some honest journalism?

I am amazed you printed Carl Turner’s letter in last week’s Magnet. I began becoming politically aware more than twenty years ago. I’ll give an example from a different newspaper.

“Police gun down man who allegedly shot officer.”

  • LETTER: Building on park's field day

Spencer County Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank all the sponsors who helped to put on our first-ever field day. We hope to build from this event and continue to host events for our youth.

A special thanks goes to: Peoples Bank, Citizens Union Bank, Spencer County Insurance, Spencer County Farm Bureau Insurance, Dollar General, Creekside Florist and Gifts, Shelbyville Walmart, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, Hometown Pizza, Snappy Tomato Pizza, Cindy’s Consignments, Plum Creek Rentals, and all the kids who participated.

  • LETTER: Try a different party

What a charming ad by Spencer County Democrats – with the two cute little girls on horseback – purporting that they are the caretakers of “community and family values”.  I wish it was true.

  • GUEST COLUMNIST: Don't cash that check

With the worsening economy, an increasing number of Kentuckians are being victimized by fraudulent, unsolicited business offers commonly originating outside the United States.  County attorneys throughout Kentucky are reporting an upswing in this type of activity.  In one case, an elderly victim was defrauded of $1.1 million by a Canadian source before the scam was discovered and stopped.

The most common of these scams begins with the receipt of an unsolicited cashiers’ check in the mail.

  • LETTER: Thanks for helping with benefit

The Long family would like to thank all family and friends that came out to support the benefit for Thomas Long.

Your prayers and support have been greatly appreciated.

We love you and God Bless.

  • MATTER OF OPINION: Will the alcohol vote split the community?

Did you get a look at the results of this week’s poll question posted online at spencermagnet.com?

If you could vote today, would you chose to allow alcohol sales in Spencer County?

    No     50% (39 Votes)

    Yes     48.7% (38 Votes)

    Total Votes: 78

If these extremely unscientific results are any indication of the battle that could be before us – we are all in for a wild ride filled with heated debates.

  • LETTER: Response to unfair coverage letter

Where do I begin? That's the question that has been plaguing my mind after reading the opinion letter by Ms. Furgason on July 29. I've decided that I will try my hardest to remain entirely objective. So please forgive me if I can not.

  • LETTER: "Jenkins should resign"

I notified Rep. Brad Montell in 2008, concerning loopholes I found in KRS 132.023 and .017. Better known as House Bill 44. These loopholes were directly related to the operation of any charter government. The loopholes pose an enormous threat to taxpayer's rights, afforded in House Bill 44. Montell and I quietly tried to resolve the threats in the 2009 legislative assembly, however, opposition was found. Who? Why?
