  • Local dentist thanks community for support

We wanted to express our thanks and gratitude for the many people who participated in our 2nd annual CANDY-BUY-BACK “Treats for our Troops” event. Special thanks go out to the Spencer County Track & Cross Country members who volunteered their time and talents at the face painting table and other areas.

Bill Greenwell and the Knights of Columbus donated many cases of Tootsie Rolls for distribution and Hillcrest Center in Louisville made a huge donation of candy, as well.

  • KSP Captain responds to reader complaint

I am writing in reference to a letter to the editor which appeared in your newspaper on January 5, 2011, titled “Reader upset lack of law enforcement” written by Allison Greer Hughes.

Upon reading this letter I obtained a copy of the audio recording of her sister’s telephone call reporting the crash with a deer. The first call was received at 6:03 a.m. and after obtaining the necessary information, our telecommunicator identified this location as in the city limits of Taylorsville.

  • COLUMN: Is church really a big deal?

Are you the kind of person that needs to know how something works or why you’re supposed to do it that way?  I have asked the same questions myself. “Why do I have to go to church?”  “Why Sunday?”  “What’s the big deal about church anyway?”  I commend you for asking good questions.  We need to understand two things: God blesses those who obey Him – even without knowing all the answers; secondly, answers are for our benefit, not God’s.

  • LETTER: Thanks for help with Christmas Assistance Program

The Family Resource Center and the Youth Service Center would like to thank all of you for your fantastic support and generosity in making our Christmas Assistance program a huge success this year.  The needs of our families were greater this year due to the economy but your hard work and efforts in supporting this program overcame the obstacles to help many of our families.

  • LETTER: A vote for anti-smoking bill

Our local legislators, Rep. Brad Montell and Sen. Paul Hornback, said they aren’t interested in passing a statewide anti-smoking bill. This bill should be voted on and passed. Why?

According to the National Cancer Society, secondhand smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds of which more than 60 are known or suspected to cause cancer.
