Today's Opinions

  • GUEST COLUMNIST: Christmas already? How the year has flown

“What’s to-day!” cried Scrooge, calling down to a boy in Sunday clothes. “What’s today, my fine fellow?” said Scrooge.

“Today!” replied the boy. “Why, Christmas Day.”

“It’s Christmas day!” said Scrooge to himself. “I haven’t missed it. The Spirits have done it all in one night.”

  • LETTER: Disc golf, pool can be built with community support

I like the Magnet’s poll on Disc Golf. I like the idea of a pool. I like the idea of a lodge. Yes, we can have all in the same area. I hope that by bringing the disc golf to this area that with a world class course we will be able to attract many more people to Spencer County and this area through tourism.

  • LETTER: Join disc golf club

I would like to thank the Spencer Magnet on last week’s story concerning the possibility of Taylorsville Lake State Park getting a world class disc golf course.

Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. Disc golf can provide several benefits to this community because it promotes health and fitness, encourages recreation, and provides a healthy alternative to physical contact sports.

  • LETTER: Chief warns of home heating fires

The recent tragic heating fire in Ashes Creek Community has left our community saddened and questioning. How could this happen here? We often hear of fires on television or in the newspaper, but we never imagine that one will hit so close to home.

  • LETTER: Taxing the joy out of Christmas
  • LETTER: Just wondering, again

I have a few more questions about the place we love:

Why was gas 10 cents cheaper yesterday in Shelbyville than it was here? Would it still be that way today if Cricketz didn’t lead the way lowering prices around here?

Can the metro-McDonald’s area get us into that World Records book? Do we have the closest 8 stop signs in the world now? If not, do we have the 9 stop signs closest to a red light?

  • FROM THE CAPITOL: Time to begin working across party lines

To many people, it must have been a remarkable picture.

After months of bitter campaigning, President-elect Barack Obama sat next to Sen. John McCain for a meeting a few days ago. They talked at length about how they could reach across party lines to discuss – and move forward on – some of the nation’s most challenging issues.

If they can do this on a national level, why can’t we do it in Kentucky?

  • A MATTER OF OPINION: It’s a family tradition

Isn’t this the most wonderful time of the year?

I simply love the Christmas season. The lights. The music. The smell of Chex Mix baking in the oven.

Yes, you read that right. Not gingerbread or sugar cookies, but Chex Mix. It’s a tradition in my family that at the first hint of a wintry breeze, someone’s making a trip to the store for couple of cereal boxes and some Worcestershire sauce.
