Today's Opinions

  • LETTER: October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month

In 1988, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October to be Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in the United States. The U.S. congress officially recognized October 15 as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day in 2006. I just wanted to invite everyone to light a candle at 7 p.m. on October 15 and keep it burning for at least one hour in your local area in memory of all of our babies that were taken too soon.

  • GUEST COLUMNIST: Investigation continues in wholesale gas prices

Let me first say that it has been heartening to see communities across Kentucky pull together to help those in need following the devastating windstorm that swept across our state on September 14.  Families were put to the test with damaged homes, loss of power and in some cases, the loss of life. As Kentuckians so often do when faced with adversity, we responded with kindness, compassion and concern for our neighbors.

  • A MATTER OF OPINION: Denying information at taxpayers’ expense

Have you been following the actions of your Spencer County School Board lately? Well you should, because whether they are spending $300 or $300,000 in a lawsuit against fellow board member Sandy Clevenger, that’s your tax money they are using. Tax money to essentially deny you – and every other taxpayer in the county – the right to know how board members individually evaluate the superintendent’s performance.

  • LETTER: Thank you for helping

September 13, 2008, was the Greater Louisville Walk for Juvenile Diabetes. I would like to personally thank all that participated in the walk. Spencer County was well represented with over 250 walkers. It is a great feeling that a community can come together for such a worthy cause! As of this date, the walk has generated over $815,000 for a cure! I’d also like to thank Hometown Pizza, Froman Drug, Country Mart, Dairy Queen, and On the Way Café for their support. Thank you also to the Spencer County elementary and  middle school dance teams for performing!

  • LETTER: Once a proud Democrat

I have been having discussions with several Democrats lately and I am amazed at what I’ve been hearing.  Let me begin by saying that I was a registered Democrat for 25 years.  I have been a Republican for only 19 years. What happened? The Democrat party went too far to the left and it has continued the drift.

  • A MATTER OF OPINION: Debt and taxes

Are you scared yet by the financial crisis on Wall Street? Consider this, instead of being frightened by the turmoil, arm yourself with information – not from 30 second news bites either, but from reading everything you can in newspapers, on the Internet and by watching in-depth news programs.

  • LETTER: Littering is a violation of freedom

Big burger bags, water bottles, empty ice bags, and other garbage and litter still invade our county on a daily basis. As citizens of a democracy, we have freedom of speech, with life and liberty thrown in as a bonus. What we oft times forget, our freedoms are restricted to the point of not infringing on the freedoms and rights of others around us.

  • LETTER: A response to “Nobody Important"

This letter is in response to “Nobody Important” who appeared in the September 10 edition of the Spencer Magnet.

First of all, I wonder what’s really eating this person. It seems as though the writer is voting for Sarah Palin only because she is a woman. Don’t get me wrong. I voted for Senator Hillary Clinton, so this has nothing to do with me thinking that a woman can not handle the job.
