  • BUSINESS VIEWPOINT: The Magnet is our county’s preferred choice

For most of us, there is some measurement used to gauge our success, or relative strength, within our markets. Schools use test scores as one of their measurements of success, banks are judged by their financial scorecards, and newspapers are judged by their respective circulation numbers as compared to other media in their competitive markets.

Once again, the numbers are in, and once again, the Spencer Magnet is the preferred print reading material for Spencer county residents.

  • LETTER: 2008–What a Year

Editor’s note: The following is a poem written by Sharon Hoover and re-printed with her permission.

    Twas the year Recession came,

Gave families time to play board games.

Since banks are failing at a rapid pace.

Never knew bankers could be so dumb

That they’re not responsible for the things they’ve done.

  • LETTER: Bus drivers deserve praise

I would like to thank all the bus drivers that gets out there everyday, risking their lives taking peoples children to school everyday. I don’t think that the bus drivers get enough reconcilitation that they derserve.

Parents or citizens that complain about the bus drivers need to go and drive those buses and find out what all the bus drivers go through within a days time and all the responsibility they have. I just wanted to thank the bus drivers everywhere to let them know that some people do care.

  • LETTER: Where hope comes from

It is hard to believe that another year has almost gone by and 2009 is just around the corner. We have all been witness to many newsworthy events in our local community, state and nation during this past year, that will impact us all. On January 20 of next year our country will have a new president who will be faced with many difficult problems to overcome. We have all grown accustomed to hearing in the news about bailouts, job layoffs, increases in foreclosures and the drop in the stock market.

  • LETTER: Recycle Christmas trees

This year, when at last the party’s over, remnants of the christmas tree can be taken to the park for chipping. This will give us the opportunity to create mulch from the discarded trees. Waste not, want not, the adage goes.

    Happy New Year!

  • LETTER: Just what is our future?

There is a small article in the January, 2009 Reader’s Digest, on page 20 (I always wondered how you could come out with something the year before). It is under a little heading ‘Money’.

    It reads:

“Some new ideas floated by U.S. economists and experts, gathered by the Washington Post.

    • Have states suspend their sales tax.

    • Boost home sales by lowering mortgage rates to 4 percent.

    • Recalculate mortgage terms when values in an area fall 20 percent.

  • LETTER: We gather together

Friday evening, we gathered at Robin Garcia’s house. Then we caravanned to the Sanctuary Arts Center for their music jam session. This was my first visit to the Sanctuary, and I was pleasantly surprised. The first level had all sorts of art, including handcrafts, all for sale. We walked upstairs, and it was a very large room with a variety of people and musicians. There was even talent there that you wouldn’t expect outside of the political arena!!

But people were there that I would have never expected to see!
