  • LETTER: Count your Christmas blessings

    Everyone is getting ready for the Christmas holiday, with people running to and fro, trying to get that special gift before anyone else got it.
    But after all of this, people are not happy. This is supposed to be a time to be happy. We need to go back to that night when it was time for Mary to have her baby.
    She and Joseph had to stay in the stables for there was no room in the inn. So, when Mary had her baby, she laid him in the manger and named him Jesus.

  • LETTER: Enjoying your Christmas gifts

    Christmas is the most wonderful day of the year because it celebrates the birth of our savior Jesus Christ, but some of us think of it as a time to receive gifts.
    I’d like to ask you a question: Do you have a home, clothes to wear, food to eat, a job and family and friends who love you? If you can answer with a yes, then you are enjoying the most precious gifts that anyone could ask for, so what else would anyone need if they have all those things?

  • EDITORIAL: Tech center is good move for school district

    Spencer County High School is undergoing a transformation in the next school year, but passersby won’t be able to tell from the outside.
    The Spencer County Board of Education passed a resolution last month to support SCHS as a location for a career and technical education site.
    We applaud the board members, as well as Principal Curt Haun and Assistant Principal Steven Rucker, for pushing forward to fill this need in the Spencer County educational community.

  • LETTER: Thankful for excellent care

    Recently, I was an inpatient at a local care facility in Taylorsville for rehabilitation after I fell, broke my hip and had follow-up surgery. Though I would have preferred not to have had the physical experience, I made many new friends at the care facility, friends who impacted my life in a positive way and made a difficult stretch much more tolerable.

  • LETTER: Support program is a ‘win-win for the Sheriff’s Department’

    I agree with Sheriff [Donald “Buddy”] Stump’s efforts to obtain needed equipment free from the Department of Defense (DoD).  I am a recently retired officer from the Marine Corps and my last tour of duty was as a site commander of a Marine Corps Reserve Center in Michigan.

    We are rapidly approaching Christmas and festivities, dinners, and all forms of celebrations that can create a massive overload of excessive trash. Everything from Christmas cards to Christmas trees must be put away or eliminated, usually after the mess we have made with our New Year’s Eve parties.

  • COLUMN: You don’t have to feel alone this Christmas

    I’m a huge football fan. Most Sunday afternoons you’ll find me plopped down in front of a TV keeping up with as much NFL news as possible. I follow more NFL experts on Twitter than my husband does, and I use my spare time to stay up-to-date on the latest news.
    So, checking my Twitter feed on Saturday, I was shocked and saddened by the news coming out of Kansas City.
