Butting heads on the budget

Despite a long list of budget questions presented by a magistrate, the Spencer County Fiscal Court voted 4-2 to approve its 2013-14 budget ordinance on Monday morning.
Magistrate Mike Moody presented three, typed pages of questions regarding the budget during Monday’s meeting.
Judge-Executive Bill Karrer presented the budget during the May 6 meeting, and the first reading of the ordinance passed by a 5-1 vote. Magistrate Jerry Davis cast the only dissenting vote; Moody voted in favor after the first reading.

Relay for Life this Friday

Feelings of bittersweet excitement mixed with hope, some sadness and determination will be coursing through the veins of Spencer County Relay for Life participants this Friday and Saturday as they walk to raise cancer research funds and heighten awareness of the all-too-common disease.

High school is just not what it used to be. Students are increasingly headed in different academic directions, from selecting technical career paths to racking up high school and college credits simultaneously. And this summer, school can still be in session for those students wanting to get a jump on higher education.

Dealing with insect carpenters...

I absolutely do not approve of killing bees. In fact, we are in a bit of a crisis with a diminishing population with the suspected cause being the use of pesticides, notably neonicotinoids. I do not fear bees, I am not allergic, and I can happily co-exist — except that they are eating my house. Or, rather they are tunneling into the wood that makes up my house so they can lay eggs and have lots of babies.

Two local students to attend KFB...

Ninety-four high school juniors from 60 counties across the state have accepted invitations to attend Kentucky Farm Bureau’s 28th annual Institute for Future Agricultural Leaders held in two locations this month.
Spencer Countians Darilyn Browning and Tyler Goodlett will be two of the 48 students attending the institute at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

District approves agreement for...

A school resource officer will be trained and ready to serve Spencer County Public Schools this fall now that both the Taylorsville City Commission and the Spencer County Board of Education have adopted an agreement setting out the officer’s duties and pay.

Sign ups for Spencer County Stallions Football
Sign ups for the Spencer County Stallions Youth Football Association will be Saturday at the Ray Jewell Park baseball fields from 10 a.m. til 2 p.m.
Teams practice three days a week and games are on Saturdays.
Spencer County Stallions are also in need of a cheer coordinator. If you may be interested in the position please contact us on the Spencer County Stallions Facebook page.

Taylorsville Police Citations -...

The Taylorsville Police Department issued the following citations from May 21 through May 27:

Keenan M. Blevins, 20, of Meadows Drive in Mount Washington, was cited May 21 for failure to wear seat belts.

Theodore Waldridge, 29, of Winter Lake Drive in Louisville, was cited May 21 for no registration plates and no registration receipt.

Dennis R. Peach, 52, of Bardstown Road in Lawrenceburg, was cited May 21 for failure to wear seat belts.
