LETTER: Nation family says thanks

Loyola University New Orleans awarded 1,036 degrees at its undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremony at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Saturday, May 11.
Laarni Domagas Russell, from Fisherville, received a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the College of Social Sciences.

Parking spots in Heaven

The great thing about having a car is it can get you from here to there quickly. The drawback is finding a place to park once you get there. Work usually isn’t a problem; we generally figure that out after a little while and park in pretty much the same place every day. It’s when we are going somewhere else we struggle with parking.

LETTER: Salary, wages and...

There has been much discussion about employees paid under salary (exempt) and there seems to be much misunderstanding about that term. Being curious, I looked it up and salary (exempt) is an employee on salary not eligible for overtime pay and an employee on salary (nonexempt) can receive overtime pay. There are restrictions on who can be under salary (exempt) listed in the Fair Labor Standards Act regulations and you can look them up.

Leaning over a fence, taking photos and taking notes for five nights over the past couple of weeks may not sound exciting, but following the Spencer County Bears baseball team as they made a historic run in the postseason is one of the most enjoyable things I’ve ever covered.

COLUMN: New writer joins Magnet...

Readers will have a new writer for the Spencer Magnet, but not for long. I’m the summer intern and will be spending 10 weeks in Taylorsville working at the paper.
I’m 20 years old and will be starting my third year at the University of Kentucky this fall. With Spencer County’s relative close proximity to Louisville and the Cardinals, I only hope that won’t be held against me.

BACK IN TIME: Frances Chesser...

Editor’s note: Bloomfield resident Margie Stephens recently contacted The Spencer Magnet and asked us to rerun the following article, which originally appeared in April 2002, in honor of her friend Frances Chesser. The article appears as it ran in 2002 and The Magnet acknowledges some of the information may be out of date.

When Frances Chesser began working in the lunchroom for the county’s only school back in 1962, she didn’t think she’d be working in same kitchen long enough to celebrate a 30-year anniversary, but she did.
