The Kentucky National Guard’s 133rd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment departed May 1. Spencer County resident Sgt. Cody Stagner is part of the detachment being deployed. The unit is headed to Guantanamo Bay for nine months to assist the public affairs office there with media operations during the upcoming trial of the alleged Al-Qaeda members charged with planning the 9/11 attacks. The Spencer County Fiscal Court on Monday approved on first reading its $6.6 million budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year.
The budget will not be finalized until the court votes on it after a second reading, which will occur before June 30. Magistrate Jerry Davis was the lone vote against the first reading of the budget ordinance Monday morning.
Judge-Executive Bill Karrer presented the proposed budget near the end of Monday’s meeting.

The Taylorsville City Commission will meet Wednesday (today) for its third budget workshop in three weeks.
The meeting is set for 4 p.m. at the City Hall Annex and is open to the public.
At Thursday’s budget workshop, commissioners discussed topics ranging from approving the budget as submitted by the city’s accounting and finance staff to cutting back on the police department budget, cutting out a portion of budgeted overtime for police officers and water/sewer staff and eliminating the Main Street Manager position.

This weekend will feature a Main Street committee-sponsored companion event to the Kentucky Gourd Festival, but the committee is changing it up this year.
The inaugural Main Street Fleamarket will take the place of the arts and crafts show hosted by the committee over the last several years.
“Arts and crafts shows, with the economy the way it is, they’re not doing well,” said Jan Deigl, Main Street committee member. “So we decided to try something new. Fleamarkets are a popular attraction.”
