COLUMN: ‘Take heart, I have overcome the world’

John 16:32-33 says, “Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Jesus spoke the words recorded in St. John chapter 16 during his last supper with his disciples. It was the night he would be betrayed by Judas. It was the night before he would be crucified for the sins of the world.

Classmates, family and friends gathered at Ray Jewel Park Saturday evening for a walk-a-thon memorializing fallen classmates Chaz Goodlett, Shelby Bockting and Michaella ‘Mikie’ Monroe.

Goodlett died in 2009 after an accident in which he fell off the back of a golf cart, causing severe head trauma. Bockting and Monroe both died in a car accident in early 2012 on Mike Brown Road.

Mason named Magnet publisher

Lynette Mason, who has served as The Spencer Magnet’s advertising director and general manager for the past five years, is now the newspaper’s publisher — the first publisher to be named for The Magnet in 23 years.

LETTER: Medicaid expansion to become taxpayer burden

Was anyone moved by Gov. Steve Beshear’s alligator tears on TV as he described how President Barack Obama’s administration was going to give $800 million to Kentucky for expansion of Medicaid? Or how it was necessary to bypass the legislative process?  His performance made me reach for my wallet to make sure it was still in my pocket.

COLUMN: Where we were and where we are

When I was a kid, we did not have a large amount of waste to dispose of. The top of a tin can was saved to use when a mouse would chew a hole in the floor or baseboard of a building. The can was saved to store small items such as tacks. What was paper waste got burned. Everybody had a hollow or sinkhole to dispose of the unusable waste.

Now that Andrew Wiggins has made his choice without fanfare, Rick Pitino has his tattoo, Orb has moved to Pimlico and John Calipari manages to keep his name in the news (inviting Bill Clinton to his fantasy camp), the next big thing in Kentucky has to be Drew Barker.
Connor High School’s splendid 6-feet-3, 215-pound quarterback is GI Joe clean-cut, tall enough to see over crowds at the mall, has no tattoos that we know about, and is the latest prize grease-penciled onto Mark Stoops’ board in the war room in Lexington.

Knights of Columbus to host chicken dinner
The Knights of Columbus will host its monthly chicken dinner Sunday at All Saints Catholic Church from noon to 2 p.m.

VBS at Finchville Baptist
Finchville Baptist Church will host vacation Bible school June 2-6 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each day.
The theme is “Kingdom Rock.”

First Baptist announces VBS
Vacation Bible school at First Baptist Church in Taylorsville will be June 3-7 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. The church is located at 115 W. Main St.

COLUMN: Make sense through the fog

It was foggy this morning as I walked the dog.  It wasn’t that dense, “can’t see your hand in front of your face,” kind of fog. In fact you could only tell it was there if you looked across the street, the neighbors house was just a little blurry. But then looking out a little farther, things got more indistinct, until finally everything just disappeared.

COLUMN: Meetings highlight vegetable diseases, poisonous plants

Now that it looks like springtime has finally arrived, many of us will turn our attention to our gardens, yards, and pastures.  I think all of us are glad that spring is here for now at least.
Many of us have our gardens up and growing, but with the cooler temperatures that we have had over the last few weeks, some of us haven’t been able to get our gardens out yet.  But once the plants start growing, it is almost inevitable that your garden will get some sort of disease on tomatoes, squash, etc.

Police conduct weapons search at SCHS

Following multiple fights last week at Spencer County High School and rumors that students might bring knives and possibly a gun to school Monday, local law enforcement set up backpack and pocket checks going into the high school Monday morning.
Members of the Taylorsville Police Department, the Spencer County Sheriff's Department and the Kentucky State Police searched backpacks and had students empty their pockets into searchable pans as they came through the front doors of the school, Taylorsville Police Chief Toby Lewis said.
