PHOTO: Lady Bears fall to Lady Chargers

A Bullitt East base runner beats a throw to second base that Spencer County shortstop Allie Sharp is fielding as second baseman Elisabeth Huckleberry backs her up on the play. The lady Bears fell 13-0 to the Lady Chargers last Tuesday and are suffering through a 2-20 season so far. The girls were to be back in action Monday, weather permitting, against Collins and will play on Wednesday as they host Bullitt Central at 5:30 p.m. They are set to travel to Christian Academy of Louisville on Thursday at 5 and will play Sacred Heart at Jeffersonville on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

District Judge Donna Dutton heard the following cases April 12 in Spencer District Court:

Gregory S. Clark (1967), operating on a suspended/revoked operator’s license, amended to no license in possession, guilty, $20 fine; failure to produce insurance card, amended to failure to maintain proper insurance, guilty, $500 fine, $400 conditionally discharged. All fines/fees to be paid in installments/deferred payment.

Host families sought for one-month 4-H international exchange program

Local families are needed to host Japanese exchange students, ages 12 to 15, for four weeks this summer as part of an exchange program sponsored by Kentucky 4-H. The Japanese youth will stay with their American host families from mid-July to mid-August. Classmates, family and friends gathered at Ray Jewel Park Saturday evening for a walk-a-thon memorializing fallen classmates Chaz Goodlett, Shelby Bockting and Michaella ‘Mikie’ Monroe.

Goodlett died in 2009 after an accident in which he fell off the back of a golf cart, causing severe head trauma. Bockting and Monroe both died in a car accident in early 2012 on Mike Brown Road.

Library seeks yearbook donations to preserve local history

The Spencer County Public Library has a collection of local yearbooks that patrons use for genealogy research and browsing the past. These yearbooks do not circulate, but are available by request at the front desk. The collection is incomplete, and the library seeks donations for the following years:

Part of Bloomfield Road to get a state facelift

More than $27 million in asphalt rehabilitation projects have been awarded by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet as the spring construction season gets underway.
The first asphalt projects of the season are distributed over 45 counties.
“Maintaining our roadways is one of the most important responsibilities of the Transportation Cabinet,” Kentucky Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said. “Well-maintained roads are safer for motorists. They’re also important for economic development and community growth.”
