    Peanut Butter-Banana . . . salad?

    Ardia Herndon’s peanut butter and banana salad recipe has been a family favorite for generations on both sides of her family.

    “My husband’s aunt gave it to my grandmother probably seventy years ago. I’ve known it since I was a child,” said Herndon, who grew up in Wakefield but moved to Elk Creek when she married fifty-eight years ago. It was one of her husband’s favorites as a child. When he visited his aunt, he ate enough peanut butter banana salad to make himself sick.

    GUEST COLUMN: Kincheloe Station...

    They came from the east to challenge the elements and face the dangers of territory that would become the state of “Kentucky.”

    It was 230 years ago, in the spring of 1780, that a few brave families chose to settle near the upper waters of a creek named for explorer Tom Simpson.

    A stockade was constructed near Simpson Creek and was named for the leader of the group, William Kincheloe, and was called “Kincheloe Station.”

    Millview Bed and Breakfast opens...

    Husband and wife proprietors, Larry and Rita Dennison, have opened Millview Bed and Breakfast at 139 Elk Creek Road, less than a mile from downtown Taylorsville

    The bed and breakfast features a single 1,000-square-feet, 5-room suite, with a queen-size bed. Amenities include a fully-stocked service center and a choice of full or continental breakfast.

    The Dennisons live on-site at the fully restored 1897 Queen Anne Victorian home, which boasts 10-feet ceilings and original hardwood floors.

    Thread and Thimble

    Thread and Thimble is an informal sewing club formed as an off-shoot of the quilting clubs of the Spencer County Homemakers. It has evolved into a way for the members to share their knowledge and support one another with their friendship.

    “It started out as a few of us ladies wanted to expand our sewing abilities,” said club president Pat Douglas. “We’ve come a long way.”

  • Need a sweet treat?

    Judy Bowman got her recipe for her apricot nectar cake from a coworker several years ago. Her office often has potluck luncheons and someone brought this cake.

    “No matter where you take it, everyone loves it because it’s so moist,” said Bowman. The vanilla pudding and apricot nectar added to the cake make it extra moist, and the nectar gives it a unique exotic flavor.

    Bowman brings this cake whenever she is going to a potluck or family gathering. She recently brought the cake to a potluck dinner meeting of the Bluegrass Basket Guild.

    Toys for Tots bring local Christmas...

    For the first time this Christmas, Spencer County will exclusively have a Toys for Tots program that benefits local children.

    Spencer County resident Bruce Kapfhammer of Toys for Tots Taylorsville is heading up the collection efforts in conjunction with the Spencer County Family Resource Center and the Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District.

    Toys for Tots is a national program sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and benefits the children of less fortunate families whose parents might not have the resources to purchase holiday gifts.

    Revival at Minor Chapel AME Oct. 18

    The Minor Chapel AME at 425 Jefferson Street will host a two-night fall revival Oct. 18 and 19 at 7 p.m.

    Rev. Robert Marshall will be the guest speaker.The community is invited to attend.

    Kids’ Crusade at New Hope

    The New Hope Tabernacle at 722 Townhill Road is hosting a Kids’ Crusade Oct. 18-20 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

    The event will include Bible stores, puppet skits, music and more.

    All children are invited to attend.

    Ag field day foils farm fables

    In this age, children are more separated from the farm than ever. Last Friday, Spencer County and Taylorsville Elementary school students had the opportunity to learn that corn, in fact, does not come from a can and milk does not originate from a plastic jug.

    The annual Spencer County chapter of the Kentucky Farm Bureau sponsored its annual Agricultural Field Day in conjunction with the community’s elementary schools.

    Beginners welcome at basket guild

    Everyone who comes to a Bluegrass Basket Guild meeting leaves with a basket. Each meeting is actually a basket-making class. Beginners are welcome.

    “Even beginners can do it because they don’t need to have their own supplies,” said Madonna Cash, who taught a bushel basket class at September’s meeting. “Beginners might not be at the same level but everyone leaves with a nice basket.”

    Our current weather conditions demand that we rethink some of our fall chores. Fall lawn and tree fertilization should come later this year then normal because of the drought conditions. An application of high nitrogen now would only burn up what little green grass you may have and force trees to work more then they should under stressful conditions.

  • Hickstock music festival this...

    Hickstock is a music festival that gives back.

    This Saturday, musicians from Spencer and surrounding counties will converge on the stage at the fairgrounds for a day mixed with kicking back and kicking your heels up.

    While patrons and participants are having a good time, the gate admission will be used to help bring joy to the lives of other. All proceeds from Hickstock will be split between the Spcncer County Sheriff’s Department’s Shop With a Cop and the arts program at Spencer County schools.

  • Chili supper to help seniors get to...

    For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America, Spencer County High School’s senior class is planning to travel to New York City this spring for its senior trip.

    The Board of Education voted at its September meeting to allow the class to travel by chartered bus for an educational trip to New York April 25-29.
