    Swine show winners

    Matthew Jeffiers was named eighth in his showmanship division, while Courtney Jeffiers earned fourth in her division.

    In the swine skill-a-thon, Courtney Jeffiers was second out of 19, Matthew Jeffiers was third out of 21, Ashley Montgomery was eighth out of 10, and Danielle Montgomery was 12th out of 21.

    Danielle Montgomery showed the Spotted Grand Champion gilt and also was Kentucky Proud Spot Champion.

This next year I will be celebrating my real birthday, which is when I was born again through the blood of Jesus Christ. In this rebirth, I will live forever.     After all the protesting, the church responsible for heading up “International burn a Koran day” called it off – but not before capturing the attention of the entire world. By September 11, 2010, the intended date of the bonfire, the story of the small congregation in Gainesville, Florida to burn the Muslim holy book had become so objectionable that it no longer mattered if the actions were carried out or not. The damage that has been done is irreversible.

    Consignment store owner's love...

    Cindy Brown Baxter looks forward to taking time off from the consignment stores she  operates in Taylorsville and Mt. Washington – so she can shop at other consignment stores.

    “I love going  Goodwilling and seeing what other shops have to offer,” says the personable owner of Cindy’s Consignments in Settler’s Center, next door to Radio Shack.

    The five-room building once housed a paint store and, more recently, a church.

  • What's Happening: Spencer...

    Mayoral debate

    Spencer County Chamber of Commerce and the Spencer Magnet will be hosting a mayoral debate Thursday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. Candidates for Taylorsville mayor will participate in a question and answer format with some questions taken from the audience. The mayoral debate will take place in lieu of the regular chamber meeting. The Spencer County Chamber of Commerce building is located on the corner of Main and Main Cross streets.

    The regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 9 has been canceled in order to hold the mayoral debate on Sept.16.

    Grand champion twice over

    Taylor Stevenson-Tolle, a senior at Mercy Academy, won the 4-H & FFA Grand Champion Market Steer and Grand Champion Heifer at the 2010 Kentucky State Fair.  This is her third grand champion steer, and the first time she’s secured both champion steer and champion heifer in the same year.  Taylor’s steer is crossbred out of Heat Wave, her champion heifer is a chianina breed which also won grand champ chianina in the open show.  Taylor also had the AOB champion breed heifer and the Commercial champion breed heifer in the junior shows.  Taylor has been a

    Family Fun Night at First Christian Church

    First Christian Church will be having Family Fun Night on Friday September 17 starting at 6 p.m.  Cost is $10 and will include a pork chop dinner with potato salad,  baked beans, drinks and a dessert.  Following the dinner will be a fun time of Bingo with an assortment of prizes for the winners.  All proceeds will benefit First Christian Church and their activites.  Please join us for a fun night!

  • FAITH FOR TODAY: What do you see?

    Sometimes I think I must be the least observant guy in America.  I recently gave a friend directions to our house, and when he arrived he said, “Why didn’t you just tell me to turn after the ‘Welcome to Taylorsville’ sign?”  There’s a sign?  How long has that been there?  My wife jumped in to agree that there is indeed a sign!  Naturally, the next time I drove in, there it was, big as life.  It’s actually a pretty nice sign; sorry I missed it all these years!

     Spencer County Sheriff Steve Coulter (left) presented Dr. Alex Shelley with a certificate of thanks at Wednesday’s fiscal court meeting. Coulter told court members that Shelley has donated countless hours at his veterinary office helping hurt and homeless animals found by law enforcement officers.

    Thomas, Barlow are 'saluted...

    Chase Andrew Thomas and Steve Konnor Barlow were among 818 high school juniors from 47 high schools in Central Kentucky that were recognized at this year’s “Youth Salute”.  The 30th Annual Awards Ceremony was held May 2, at Georgetown College.  A top Youth Leader was named for each high school and Thomas was given that honor.

    Where memories are made

    In August of 2003, Lora Cheek decided that she wanted to make a playhouse for her granddaughters, then three and seven, as a Christmas gift. She was recovering from broken ribs that she had sustained in a fall from a horse, and started brainstorming a way to accomplish her goal.

    She had an upstairs storage room that she was considering converting to another use. It occurred to her that if she turned the storage room into a playhouse, then the girls could use their playhouse year round, something they could not do if their playhouse was outside.

    Family Night at Plum Creek Baptist

    Plum Creek Baptist Church’s Wednesday Family Night programs begin tonight at 5:45 p.m. and continue every Wednesday night during the school year.  Family night includes a meal, activities and Bible study for people of all ages including the popular FaithWeaver Friends, a children’s ministry curriculum.

    Join members this Wednesday for Family Fun Night that includes pizza, games, fun and fellowship.

  • Writer learns from work at home scam

    Being a stay-at-home mom is a full time job.  However, for many different reasons moms may need to seek out other avenues that actually bring in some cash.  I am currently one of those moms.  Trying to find a job in this economy is tough.  Add to the fact that the hours I am available to work are after the kids have gone to school in the morning and only until they get out of school in the afternoon.  Oh, one more thing, I haven’t been employed outside the home in over twelve years.  Makes for a very interesting resume.

    Field Day provides a new crop of...

    The Kentucky Department of Agriculture sponsored an Agricultural Field Day at Deutsch Farm  August 23 featuring the research that they have conducted on their farm on mum productions and the use of black plastic and drip irrigation. During the event, participants were taken on a hay ride to see the farm’s mum and vegetable crops, and hear speakers from the University of Kentucky. Dinner was catered by Barrel Smoked BBQ in Elk Creek.

    “We did a demo plot on growing mums for the University of Kentucky Agriculture Department,” said Sandi Deutsch.

    Country Ham Breakfast

    Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #210 will be having an all-you-can-eat country ham breakfast from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.  Saturday. The breakfast is $6 per person. Carry-out is available. Everyone is welcome.
