  • Dear Savvy Senior,
Are there any resources or programs that help seniors with the high cost of hearing aids?
    Can’t Afford To Hear

    Dear Can’t,

  • Eighteen members of the Taylorsville High School Class of 1952 celebrated their 60th anniversary since graduating high school by gathering on June 9 at the Spencer Coutny-Taylorsville Chamber of Commerce building.

  • Steve and Tina Kendall, along with Roxane and Tim Perry, announce the upcoming marriage of their children, Wesley Kendall and Sarah Perry.
The groom-to-be is employed with Voith Ind. Services at the Ford KTP, and  the bride-to-be is employed at the Training Wheels Daycare in Taylorsville.
The wedding will take place at the Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Mount Eden on Oct. 6, 2012, time to be announced.
Everyone is welcome to attend that knows the couple.

  • Dear Savvy Senior:
What types of simple cellphones can you recommend to seniors that are easy to use, without all the bells and whistles? My 77-year-old mother has had a cell phone for two years but never uses it because she finds it too confusing.
    Shopping For Mom

    Dear Shopping,

  • That question has had as many answers as the numbers of people who have responded. It seems that intimacy can have many, maybe too many, things attached to it.

Do you know both your telephone numbers? You do have two — a local number and a long distance number, according to Art Willett, local Southern Bell manager.
“Your long distance number is your regular number prefixed by the area code (502),” Willett said.
Area codes became necessary when the Telephone Company instituted direct distance dialing, he explained.
With the area code prefix, no two telephone numbers in the country are identical.

The next visit of the Mobile X-Ray Unit will be on Thursday, May 17, 1962. The trailer will be in Taylorsville only on this date. In November 1961, 155 X-rays were taken by the Mobile X-ray Unit in Spencer County.
T.B. can be licked if found early by means of a chest X-ray. Mass X-ray examinations of apparently healthy people will lead to the discovery of early T.B. when there is still time for recovery. Early T.B. has no outward symptoms. When symptoms appear, it is often too late.

    Recommendations
Upon inspection of the courthouse and other property the grand jury recommended that:
    1. A wash basin be installed in the jail.
    2. That two additional lights be installed in the jail.
    3. The interior of the courthouse and jail be painted.
    4. That a reputable electrician be employed to inspect the wiring in the courthouse and same be repaired if necessary.
    5. The foundation of the courthouse be inspected and repaired if needed.

  • Spring cleaning was traditionally done after a long winter of being cooped up inside, and does not seem to be as common as it once was. Some people are not even sure what exactly is involved in doing traditional spring cleaning. There are multiple steps, and it goes beyond cleaning.

  • Most teachers and parents will attest that children love to make crafts. This spring, parents and other adults that frequently work with children have a perfect opportunity to incorporate spring-themed craft activities into playtime.
While craft projects might seem like they are mostly for fun, they are a great opportunity for younger children to perfect fine motor skills and for youth to learn the value of creating something with their own hands instead of buying it at a store.

  • STEAK WITH GINGER-PLUM BARBECUE SAUCE

  • A typical Sunday and Emancipation Day — those are the two reasons the tax-filing deadline is extended to Tuesday, April 17, this spring.

  • If you make a mistake on your tax return, it can take longer to process, which in turn, may delay your refund. Here are eight common errors to avoid.
    1. Incorrect or missing Social Security numbers — When entering SSNs for anyone listed on your tax return, be sure to enter them exactly as they appear on the Social Security cards.
    2. Incorrect or misspelling of dependent’s last name — When entering a dependent’s last name on your tax return, make sure to enter it exactly as it appears on their Social Security card.

  • Spring is here, and all the good things that come with it. Mild temperatures, longer daylight hours and beautiful plant life.
