Being a stay-at-home mom is a full time job.  However, for many different reasons moms may need to seek out other avenues that actually bring in some cash.  I am currently one of those moms.  Trying to find a job in this economy is tough.  Add to the fact that the hours I am available to work are after the kids have gone to school in the morning and only until they get out of school in the afternoon.  Oh, one more thing, I haven’t been employed outside the home in over twelve years.  Makes for a very interesting resume.

Country Ham Breakfast

Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #210 will be having an all-you-can-eat country ham breakfast from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.  Saturday. The breakfast is $6 per person. Carry-out is available. Everyone is welcome.

O.R.N.A.I.C. meal and meeting

Laurita Aubrey made her pasta salad for the first time the day that she served it at the August meeting of the Spencer County Garden Club. She created the recipe using ingredients she found in her kitchen.

“I looked around, saw what I had and put it together,” said Aubrey.

Aubrey is interested in simple food and simple methods of preparation. Cooking is not her favorite activity, so she prefers to spend little time working on it.

The Spencer County FFA had a banner year in the Kentucky State CDE competitions in 2010, taking first place in 9   state CDE events, a state record.

The Dairy Judging team consisting of Stetson Baird, Jacob Walker, Lauren Brown, and Alie McGaughey  bested 44 other teams to take top honors.

Agronomy team members   Shelby Hall, Cecilia Petersen, Colling Travis, Brennan Noel, and Marianne Gaddie   were first among eighteen teams.  Brennan was high individual, and the team had the top four individual members.

Rain did not dampen the spirits of the 35 riders who showed up for the first competitive trail ride held Saturday in Spencer County for the ACTHA group. 

The ride was held on the Lipginski Farm, which is known as Whispering Oaks Farm of Kentucky and  located on Murray Road.  The event  attracted people as far away as Stanton, Kentucky and  Indianapolis, Indiana. It was a big hit for the variety of trails and obstacles along the 7 mile stretch of trails that wound through woods, open meadows and up and down hills.

Many Spencer County residents participated in the Kentucky State Fair this year by entering some of the many competitions available.

Jean Johnson, president of the Patchworkers Quilt Guild, has been entering quilts in the Kentucky State Fair since she started quilting more than twenty-five years ago. A friend challenged her to enter quilts in the fair, so she did.

Thirteen members of the Spencer County FCCLA chapter recently attended the 2010 National Leadership Meeting this past July.  The conference was held in Chicago, Illinois and was designed with various leadership workshops and competitions to strengthen chapters and members from across the United States. 

Melcany Ray learned how to make lumpia when she was seventeen and working in a restaurant in the Philippines. She made it every two days and learned the recipe by heart. They did not measure the ingredients, instead making the lumpia by feel.

Lumpia is a traditional Filipino dish, similar to spring rolls. It is often served for birthday parties or weddings.

Gardens are filled now with seasonal treats characteristic of the region like corn, tomatoes and zucchini. But if fresh produce lovers are looking for something sweet and a bit unusual this summer, local teenager Shane Greenwell can help.

This summer, with the assistance of his father, Dwight Greenwell, Shane raised a unique hybrid variety of fruit known as canary melons on his family’s farm off Highway 44 East. When ripe, the melons are characterized by their bright yellow color, waxy skin and sweet but slightly tart flavor.
