  • The text of Scripture from Luke 13:22-30 is one that many people are uncomfortable with, because Jesus talks about people going to heaven and  people going to hell.
In Luke 13:23-24 a person poses a question to Jesus: Then one said to Jesus, “Lord, are there few who are saved?” And Jesus said to them, “Strive (struggle) to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” Jesus declares how narrow the door to heaven is and that many will not fit through.

  • This past weekend we tackled some vegetable garden clean up. The hailstorm from a few weeks back destroyed most of what was left; subsequent wind and rain finished off the battered remains. So, we replanted a few crops spread wood chips in the paths to control weeds and filled the remaining empty beds with a cover crop.

  • Summertime is the time when crabgrass rears its ugly head and begins to creep through our fescue lawns, sneak into our cultivated beds and, when we’re not looking, reseeds itself to ensure the continuation of the species. Does it sound daunting? Well, I wouldn’t look at it that way entirely; let’s just say it is a challenge to keep it under control.

  • What a difference a year makes. Compare Kentucky’s drought damaged corn crop last year with the 2013 crop that is on track to be record-setting and wetter than average. To prepare, you should ready your handling equipment, dryers and storage bins well before harvest to minimize problems that can create unexpected delays.

  • Well, beginning this month there will be a new program in Spencer County bearing the name of New Directions. It’s a program developed for a target audience as it relates to  the subject of divorce.
Those who are already divorced and those who are currently active in the process of divorce are the “target audience” and the only people who will be in attendance. The date for the initial meeting is Thursday, Sept. 19, and the program will continue each Thursday thereafter.

  • Dear Savvy Senior,
Are there any programs that you know of that help seniors with their Medicare expenses? I’m 67 and live primarily on my Social Security, and am having a hard time paying my Medicare premiums, deductibles, co-pays and prescription drug costs.

  • In every home we have ever lived in, we have had a junk drawer. It is usually in the kitchen somewhere and it collects just about everything. Looking for a rubber band? It’ll probably be in the junk drawer. Looking for one of those wire tie things? Junk drawer. What happened to the scissors? They are probably hiding in the junk drawer.

  • A reading from Hebrews Chapter 11, verses 1 and 6:
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. And without faith it is impossible to please God.
Today I would like to spend our time together talking about faith, what it is and where it comes from. Let’s start out by defining what faith is. The simplest definition of faith is “trust in God.”
Let me give you some examples:
