  • With summer drawing near, it’s a good time to start thinking about protecting livestock from inevitable heat stress conditions on the way.

  • A while back, some lady explorers stopped by Spencer County to look for their ancestors’ records in the Courthouse. They were directed to me and I can’t tell you how delighted I was to learn that I have Watson cousins in Florida and Louisiana.

  • Dear Savvy Senior,
What can you tell me about online memorials? My uncle recently passed away, and some of the family thought it would be neat to create an online memorial to pay tribute to him, and accommodate the many family and friends who are scattered around the country who couldn’t attend his funeral.
    Grieving Niece
    Dear Grieving,
It’s a great idea! Online memorials have become increasingly popular over the past decade, as millions of people have created them for their departed loved ones as a way to recognize and remember them.

  • Today’s column is based on a reading from 1 Peter chapter 4 and 5:

  • I was using a pencil the other day; you know just a regular old pencil, wood, metal, eraser and a lead core. A simple little thing, and yet as I looked at it I realized that I have no idea how to make a pencil. Such a simple thing and it amazes me. I mean there is no pencil tree to pluck a ripe pencil from. Think how much work goes into that little thing that we take for granted every day.

  • A Reading from John 14:15-21:

  • It seems to me that I used to remember things better than I do now. Lately it seems that little things I used to have no trouble remembering just slip through the cracks. For example, I’ll head out to go to the bank and the post office and I’ll either forget the check I want to deposit or the envelope I want to mail.
It has gotten to the point that I double and triple check before I leave the house. Sometimes I make a list of things I need to take with me, things I need to get done, and then I forget the list. Now that is frustrating!

  • Dear Savvy Senior,
Are there any computer software products that you know of that will let me help my parents with their computer issues from afar? They are in their seventies and frequently call me with their computer questions and problems, but I live across town and don’t always have time to get in the car and drive over to help them. What’s available that can help us?

  • Little things make a big difference. A simple word of kindness to someone who is having a bad day can be a gift beyond measure. Sometimes a simple card can encourage and uplift the spirit. Little things, but somehow they matter to us.
