• Dear Savvy Senior,
Are there any programs that you know of that help seniors with their Medicare expenses? I’m 67 and live primarily on my Social Security, and am having a hard time paying my Medicare premiums, deductibles, co-pays and prescription drug costs.
    Need Some Help

    Dear Need,

  • Risen Lord Lutheran to host sale Saturday
Risen Lord Lutheran Church will host a "sale of sales" Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, located at 5138 Taylorsville Road.
Proceeds will benefit the church's building fund.
The sale will include clothing, hand tools, law and garden equipment, antiques, kitchen utensils and more.
Food and drinks will be for sale while you shop. The church will also have a cake wheel for a chance to win homemade cakes and cookies.
In case of rain, the sale will be Sept. 14.

  • In every home we have ever lived in, we have had a junk drawer. It is usually in the kitchen somewhere and it collects just about everything. Looking for a rubber band? It’ll probably be in the junk drawer. Looking for one of those wire tie things? Junk drawer. What happened to the scissors? They are probably hiding in the junk drawer.

  • A reading from Hebrews Chapter 11, verses 1 and 6:
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. And without faith it is impossible to please God.
Today I would like to spend our time together talking about faith, what it is and where it comes from. Let’s start out by defining what faith is. The simplest definition of faith is “trust in God.”
Let me give you some examples:

  • Editor’s note: Bloomfield resident Margie Stephens recently contacted The Spencer Magnet and asked us to rerun the following article, which originally appeared in April 2002, in honor of her friend Frances Chesser. The article appears as it ran in 2002 and The Magnet acknowledges some of the information may be out of date.

When Frances Chesser began working in the lunchroom for the county’s only school back in 1962, she didn’t think she’d be working in same kitchen long enough to celebrate a 30-year anniversary, but she did.
