  • Don’t fall for fake news

    In the wake of Donald Trump’s huge upset of Hillary Clinton earlier this month in the presidential election, the current finger of blame is being pointed at something called “fake news.”

    Those who are still scratching their heads trying to figure out how their polls were so wrong, are concluding that fictional or made-up stories that circulated on social media conspired to doom Clinton’s campaign. Thus, the newest issue being addressed by the media is the onslaught of what they call “fake news” and the need to combat it.

    The election is finally completed and I’m sure that, like me, you are relieved. The changes were many both in the Commonwealth and nationally. As a County Board of Election member, we were preparing for a large turnout and the questions that result from so many newly registered voters and voters who haven’t cast a ballot in awhile. The citizens were definitely motivated this year.

    Fewer than 10 percent of Americans can claim the title of veteran. Far less than one percent of our population is currently defending us in the global war on terrorism. And yet, so many seem intent on trying to balance the budget by diminishing the quality of life programs designed for the veterans who have already disproportionately made sacrifices.

  • Thank God this ain’t Portland

    On Thursday night, I watched young people marching in the streets, crying and cursing. I saw footage of college-aged people burning flags, dismembering effigies of Donald Trump and then saw footage from Portland Oregon of windows being smashed and rocks being thrown at police.

    It was enough to make you lose complete faith in the next generation.

  • What does the election mean for...

    As Spencer County Judge Executive, I’d like to share what I believe last Tuesday’s historic election means for Spencer County.  

    First, Spencer County had the highest percentage of registered voter turnout (67.88%) than all of the other 119 counties in Kentucky.  We clearly are not the largest in population of the 120 Kentucky counties, but our voters take elections seriously enough to show up and vote, on a percentage basis more so than any other county in Kentucky.

    The great enemy of progress is not always direct opposition, often its simply distraction.

    That seems to be the case in Spencer County and Taylorsville these days as there is a group of citizens who have come forward with much energy, good ideas and genuine concern for the community as they try to set the Taylorsville Strategic Plan into action.

    Hi. My name is Gaberialla. My friends and family call me Gabby. I am six years old.

    On Wednesday, October 26, I was in a car accident along with my mommy, my little sister, my twin little brothers and two of my cousins in Mt. Eden at the intersection of 248 and 636.

    I just wanted to thank everyone that helped me and my family. We are all very thankful for the fast actions and quick thinking to take care of each person involved.

  • Campaign ‘16 taught us lessons

    If you’re reading this, it means the sun came up this morning despite the direst of warnings and predictions of those who thought Tuesday’s election was going to be the end of it all.

    We survived apparently, and while I write this on Tuesday morning with no idea who is going to be our next president, or even if the there’s been an official declaration of a winner yet, I’m at least somewhat confident that life will go on.

  • Halloween event is a treat

    Monday night’s Trick or Treat on Main Street was yet another reminder of why life in a small town can’t be beat.

    The annual Halloween event is truly a family gathering of good fun, lots of candy, plenty of smiles and some of the cutest kids who open their bags wide in the hopes for plenty of treats.

    They came as ghouls, pirates, firemen and soldiers. Some dressed as princesses, fairies, bunnies and witches. Plenty of the adults got into the spirit as well, dressing up and joining in on the fun.

    If you plan to leave the Presidential choice blank on your ballot, then step back and look at the party platforms. There is no such thing as the perfect candidate or the perfect party. Never in history have the two party platforms been more opposite. Democrat platform equals more government control over your life by way of left wing federal judges and left wing Supreme Court judges. Don’t leave it blank. Speak up for your values.

  • A silver-lining in this election?

    This time next week, we will know who the next president of the United States will be.

    I actually do not feel entirely confident in that opening statement. Too much can, and likely will, happen between now and next Tuesday. This has already been the most bizarre presidential election in history and the only thing that will surprise me at this point is if the last few days pass by without new bombshells, email leaks, allegations or other unexpected twists and turns.

    The tumultuous election season is scheduled to end on November 8, when voters go to the polls. Most Americans will likely breathe a sigh of relief. But that same week, America will pause to honor the veterans whose sacrifice made voting possible.

    I am writing to endorse Rep. James A. Tipton for re-election as State Representative for Spencer, Anderson and part of Bullitt counties.

    Kentucky needs leaders like Rep. Tipton. James has proven himself in this field as a farmer, real estate broker and a highly effective State Representative. As a native of Spencer County who grew up on a farm that he and his family still operated, Tipton has the sort of common sense that is changing State Government in a positive way.

    The headline reads Right to Work in KY. The print size is easily twice as large as any other article, is in bold type and absolutely dominates the page. Unfortunately, the substance of the text just doesn’t live up to the hype. The simple fact is that “right to work” has absolutely nothing to do with anyone’s right to work; in Kentucky or anywhere in the United States. And the man who wrote the article knows it!

  • Ark is floating along smoothly

    My wife and I didn’t take a cruise for our wedding anniversary last week, but we did board a huge ship that was docked on dry land in rural Grant County.

    We visited the Ark Encounter, the lifesize replica of Noah’s Ark that has  generated no shortage of controversy since its announced construction several years ago. It also continues to attract massive crowds, and on Saturday, we were just two of nearly 7,000 people who visited the attraction.

    Improvise, adapt and overcome.

    Fans of Clint Eastwood may recognize that phrase, uttered by the actor when he played a combat-toughened Marine sergeant in the movie, “Heartbreak Ridge.”

    It’s an unofficial slogan of the USMC designed to inspire problem solving under less-than-ideal conditions. Apparently, that’s what Sheriff Buddy Stump is facing these days as his current building is infested with mold that may or may not be directly linked to the recent illnesses of two county employees who required hospital treatment.
