    In response to the letter from the clearly misinformed deputies of Spencer County; The taxpayers, aka, the public would like to let the deputies know that they are not employed by Steve Coulter.  This goes for all county employees.  You work for the taxpayers.  The person your performance is judged by may authorize your pay and sign your timecard or paycheck, but it is merely a worthless piece of paper without the money that we the taxpayers back it up with and deposit regularly to cover those expenses.

    According to Woodie Cheek’s letter to the Magnet, his farm site was pulled from one of the three original priority sites “because of my barking and biting dog way of doing things.”

    Mr. Cheek’s alarmist attitude is getting a little stale. Because of Mr. Cheek’s actions and rants, our county appears close-minded to new ideas.  I’d like to, once again, explain the series of events, if for no one else but Mr. Cheek, since he still doesn’t seem to understand.

     The Airport Board was formed from volunteers who were appointed by fiscal court to do a STUDY to see if an airport would be a good fit for our County.

    When the airport issue hit Spencer County, it was not about anyone’s backyard as much as it was the wrong thing for the wrong purpose.  Our family farm’s potential runway site was immediately pulled from one of the three original priority sites because of my barking and biting dog way of doing things.

  • LETTER: Drug bust too close to home

    I’m sure by now we have all read the paper or heard of the drug bust in Allen Place North subdivision. I’m in total agreement with Robin Bass. Not in my backyard.

    My wife and I are embarrassed and frustrated that something like this could happen so close to home. We don’t have children at home but do have grand children who visit on occasion; we care about your children and grand children.

    Many companies, organizations and individuals, along with several students, their parents and family members are responsible for making the 2010 Project Graduation a success.

    Amanda, your article titled “Paul must be mindful of Kentucky’s needs” points out how completely out of touch you are about Kentucky’s needs and indeed what the needs of an entire nation are.

    Over the next few weeks, I’ll be talking about some important issues in the City – from Blockwatch neighborhoods and motorized wheelchair visibility, to the new sewer expansion project and the Floodwall/Houston Court project. 

    Last summer I met with residents of Pin Oak, Highview, Early Wyne, and Old Town about establishing Blockwatch neighborhoods.  The support for this concept was overwhelming.

    We doubt anyone will ever forget the ice storm of 2009, and most assuredly ,people will be talking about this summer of 2010, when the oppressive heat is affecting everyone. There are days that you walk outside and it feels like the sun is on fire.

    We would imagine that most residents in Spencer County are blessed with air-conditioning, but there are those who have to endure the heat and humidity, without this luxury. There are also those whose occupations require them to work ‘outside’ in these conditions.

    The acronym NIMBY has become almost a dirty word  in recent years as, more often than not, it is associated with people that are fervently opposed to progress at the expense of their back porch views and property values. Rather than being portrayed as a champion of the little guy standing up to industry, corporations or the government – Not-In-My-Back-Yard’ers are typically viewed more as self-righteous and selfish.

    Though they weren’t celebrating just yet, officials at BP announced Thursday a well cap had temporarily stopped the thousands of gallons of oil from leaking into the ocean.

    As of Friday afternoon it was still holding and officials announced the pressure was steadily rising. A higher pressure means more oil is staying inside the well and less is leaking out. Underwater views show the temporary success as no oil can be seen leaking. But officials aren’t ready to pop the cork on the champagne just yet and for good reason.

    Spend baby spend is the new City of Taylorsville motto. Mayor Don Pay and Chairman John Shircliffe love spending your money for their exterior decorating. I was not aware that the federal and state governments had solved their debt problems, since grant money is being sought for a new city park.

    I look forward each week reading your newspaper because of your strong support for the Christian faith. Our country and its leaders are getting further and further away from our founding fathers fundamental faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. And this week what a thrill it was to see on the front page of the Spencer Magnet newspaper, people being baptized in the Salt River. This is a tremendous testimony for what your newspaper stands for and a witness to its readers.

    Whatever happened to the “separation of powers” mandated in our Constitution? Our Founding Fathers gave us this framework because they understood that power corrupts and that those who do not understand the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them.

    I am writing in response to a letter I read in last week’s paper concerning the owner of Taylorsville Pools.

    We have done a lot of business with Jim Kannapel since the opening of his store and we find him to be a very nice man.

    We bought a pump for our pool back in May and had some trouble installing it. We called Jim and he immediately came to Wakefield to help.
