    Come one, come all to celebrate the ones who gave us their all!

    November 11 is Veterans Day but this November 7th is the day the community can come out to thank and celebrate the brave men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedoms. All veterans of KY are invited to come and be honored this day.

  • LETTER: Saddened by vote

    I was saddened when I went to bed on the night Spencer County went from a dry county to a wet county.

    I grew up in Spencer County from the time I was four to about 19 when I graduated, left home and got married. At that time, it was a much different from now. I grew up in a christian home were values were taught. They were taught not only by words, but by example. I was raised in a church and taught to love God and live my life accordingly.

    I commend the Magnet for the attention they have given the Wet/Dry vote.   I have been both informed and motivated by what I have read.   I especially commend Brent Schanding for all of his hard work. 

    I would also like to thank Pastor Goodlett for his thoughts.

    I believe the Magnet has gone above and beyond in this special topic in detail, fairness and openness. I hope that we are able to continue to be blessed by this local resource.

    I have been thinking about all the publicity lately about our county judge and the views expressed by some of our citizens.

    Often we are influenced by others’ views without knowing all the facts, the people involved or the circumstances. We are quick to judge and express our views before listening to others with an open mind. It is so easy to sit back and pass judgment on others. Sometimes we forget that there may be other opinions different from our own.

  • LETTER: Litter abatement begins...

    We are fast approaching the end of 2009, and are preparing to give our county its fall cleansing. We did well with the spring and summer efforts, and, in spite of the weather, the Taylorsville Lake Operation Clean Sweep was successful.

    Because we have had such good cooperation from our groups, we are going to be more selective on which roads need the most tender loving care. Each Magistrate is going to select their most unkempt road and let me know, at the next fiscal court meeting, which road they have chosen.

  • LETTER: Humane Society needs more...

    I would like to bring attention to the present situation with the Spencer County Humane Society.

    From what I have learned and to my knowledge, only one person works at the Humane Society on Spears Drive. After multiple attempts over a period of several days trying to reach that person by telephone, website and even driving there, I was unable to contact anyone.

    Are tax dollars being spent for this service? If so, and even if not, someone needs to be there on a regular basis.

    This letter is in regard to a menace on the road. When I leave for work, heading east on KY 44 from Mt. Washington, I encounter, almost every morning, a pickup truck. Now every one seems to think that speed kills. Well, I assure you that driving 20 miles an hour on curvy, hilly roads can also kill.

    I can not count the number of cars and trucks that pass this individual every morning. I cringe when I see yet another automobile or truck pass this person on this dangerous road.

    I am an adult child of an alcoholic father. My dad, Ernest Inghram, was given his first taste of alcohol when he was 12 years of age, at school. Older folk thought it funny to let him have his first drink, then to watch his behavior, which was out of control afterwards, with laughs.

    Six months have passed since the first person put pen to paper and signed a petition to legalize the sale of alcohol in Spencer County. Now with only six days until the special-election, voters on both sides who care about the future of this small community are waiting for Tuesday when they can finally be heard.

    I was shocked a week ago when I was entering and exiting a store in Taylorsville to see children and teenagers loitering and loudly shouting profanity in public to a driver that stopped his car to speak with them in the shopping center.  This situation was unusual for our county.  Those types of incidents could escalate.  One adds alcohol or illegal drugs on top of that encounter and the end result would not be pleasant.

    On October 20, voters will have two choices when it comes to the special-election to legalizing alcohol sales in Spencer County – yes or no.

    Initially, the issue seemed a straightforward one. Either voters will be for or against converting the county’s alcohol status to wet. But if anything has been gleaned in the past six months, it is that this is no simple issue.

    Has anyone seen the yellow signs that have begun to plague our beautiful county? “Vote NO” they say.

    My question is, vote no to what? Vote no to the transportation of alcohol into Spencer County? Vote no to the consumption of alcohol in Spencer County?

    I don’t think that people really understand the meaning of the vote. The vote is only about selling alcohol in Spencer County.

  • LETTER: Stump driver trainer of year

    Congratulations to Mitzi Stump who has been awarded State Driver Trainer of the year by the Kentucky Association for Pupil Transportation.

    She was selected by the Directors of Transportation in our state. She will also be KAPT’s quest at the annual fall conference in Lexington September 29 at the Crown Plaza Conference Center.

    I want to personally thank her for her dedication to the Transportation Department and helping to keep riding the bus safe for our kids. Excellent job Mitzi!
