Thanks to all the volunteers who made Spencer County and Taylorsville the best it could be over the past three weekends.

Starting with the First Annual Taylorsville Kentucky Heritage Festival; hundreds of people from all around the region, including international Ryder Cup guests, enjoyed a wonderful mix of fine Kentucky art, antiques, folk music and home town hospitality.  Nice work Main Street Committee!

Let me first say that it has been heartening to see communities across Kentucky pull together to help those in need following the devastating windstorm that swept across our state on September 14.  Families were put to the test with damaged homes, loss of power and in some cases, the loss of life. As Kentuckians so often do when faced with adversity, we responded with kindness, compassion and concern for our neighbors.

September 13, 2008, was the Greater Louisville Walk for Juvenile Diabetes. I would like to personally thank all that participated in the walk. Spencer County was well represented with over 250 walkers. It is a great feeling that a community can come together for such a worthy cause! As of this date, the walk has generated over $815,000 for a cure! I’d also like to thank Hometown Pizza, Froman Drug, Country Mart, Dairy Queen, and On the Way Café for their support. Thank you also to the Spencer County elementary and  middle school dance teams for performing!

Are you scared yet by the financial crisis on Wall Street? Consider this, instead of being frightened by the turmoil, arm yourself with information – not from 30 second news bites either, but from reading everything you can in newspapers, on the Internet and by watching in-depth news programs.

This letter is in response to “Nobody Important” who appeared in the September 10 edition of the Spencer Magnet.

First of all, I wonder what’s really eating this person. It seems as though the writer is voting for Sarah Palin only because she is a woman. Don’t get me wrong. I voted for Senator Hillary Clinton, so this has nothing to do with me thinking that a woman can not handle the job.

To my surprise on Thursday August 28, I found out that another stop was being added to my children’s bus route. Frustrated, I contacted the transportation department to find out what was going on, since my children were already on the bus after school for an hour.

As I talked with Jack Senior, I began to realize that it wasn’t only frustrating for me as a parent, but also for Jack and his staff as well.

I would like to thank everyone who came out to support the JDRF at our Bowling for a Cure Fundraiser. We had a great turnout and everyone had lots of fun. I would like to personally thank everyone who donated their time to help me with this fundraiser. Additionally, I would like to thank the following businesses for their support in the form of donations: The Spencer Magnet, Wal-Mart Shelbyville, DQ Taylorsville, DQ Shelbyville, Graeter’s Ice Cream, Bluegrass Bowling Center and The Sentinel News.

 I admit it up front:  I’m nobody important.  I’m just a wife and mother of two boys and a girl, living life to the best down here in beautiful Spencer County, Kentucky.

I attended the August school board meeting and was very disappointed and angry over the outcome. 

A ruling was handed down by Jack Conway stating that it was illegal to have a closed meeting to discuss the evaluation of our superintendent.  Yet, instead of accepting that, some of our board members have decided to use money which could be well spent in our schools, to fight this ruling.  And they have the nerve to say they are doing what is right for our children.
