  • LETTER: County improvements should...

    For the past 18 months, I have watched our Spencer County Judge-Executive Bill Karrer work at his job way beyond 40 hours a week. This is not just a job for him, but a passion to do what is right for the taxpayers of Spencer County. He is a good man. He uses an abundance of honesty, integrity, professionalism and a careful thought process in the day-to-day business that is Spencer County. Unfortunately, many of the wonderful improvements made in the county in the past year have not been reported. They have been over-shadowed.

    We at the VFW Post 11426 in Taylorsville would like to thank the Salt River Board of Directors and employees for their generous donation to the VFW in loving memory of Darwin Thomas.
    We also want to thank the manager, Mr. Hicks, for his personal donation in memory of Darwin Thomas.
    Darwin was a great WWII veteran who helped give out Buddy Poppy’s any time he could. He worked for the VFW in many ways. He always attended the meetings and was a great voting member for the good of the Order.

    This letter is in response to some comments made by Joyce Nalley in the June 13 edition of the paper under the article titled, “City goes against county, passes zoning repeal.”
    My home is Taylorsville Place Apartments, and I was the first resident to move in last August. I have enjoyed living here and I have really great neighbors. Ms. Nalley stated in the article that if they built more apartments, it would attract less than upstanding residents. No matter where you live you could have a bad resident, it’s not just these apartments.

    The Kentucky Gourd Society thanks everyone for their time and energy in getting downtown Taylorsville ready for the Kentucky Gourd Show. A lot of effort goes into getting a show ready for the public. The show visitors always shop in downtown Taylorsville, eat at our food places, stay in our hotels and camp at our facilities.
    As always, they are so complimentary of our town and folks that live here that  make them feel welcomed.

    You will read this article, if you are quick to buy your Spencer Magnet, on Wednesday, June 27. This means we are a week into our official summer season, which means we are in the middle of the week set for our non-profit groups who wish to work in the Summer Roadside Litter Abatement Program to come in and sign up, get road assignments and get the supplies they need to collect the litter.

    Could the accusations flying around about the current sheriff, Donald “Buddy” Stump, be any more plentiful? Here at The Spencer Magnet we have had no less than 10 notifications that the sheriff is either being allegedly arrested, investigated, indicted, ousted from his post, etc., for returning a gun to a convicted felon. And, believe me, we’ve been looking into it.
    So why no story before today? Because verifiable information is what we are interested in, not rumors.

    Today, we live in a society that has access to every and any product you can imagine. We tote items to Goodwill stores, to missions, most churches have clothing centers, the list is endless.
    A lot of items, if torn, dented, bent, faded, or otherwise less than perfect is, if not given away, trashed in some manner.
    I am not the oldest man on the planet by far, but my growing up period started a little before the start of World War II.

    Well, shame on me.
    When the Taylorsville City Commission decided last week to postpone its first reading of the 2012-2013 budget so that commissioners could look into some of the matters brought up as a result of a public hearing last week, I think many attending that meeting felt a slight glimmer of hope.
    You can count me in that group.

    Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony for Hillview Academy. If all goes according to plan, I will also attend the Spencer County High School Class of 2012 graduation ceremony in Frankfort on Friday night.
    I’m just an old sap at heart (to these spry, young folks, anyway), and it doesn’t take much to get me a touch on the weepy side and feeling proud of our students.

    Now that the U.S. Senate has passed bipartisan S 1789 to reform the ailing U.S. Postal Service, critics are trying to disable the bill on its way to the House. Both postal unions and USPS want more for their side, and some Republicans mistakenly believe the bill burdens taxpayers.
    Unfortunately, Kentucky Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul both bought into that logic and opposed S 1789.

    Today, as I write, it is 80 degrees outside. Yesterday, it was 50.
    The tree pollen is heavy, vegetation is growing like crazy. My sinuses are killing me. Welcome to spring.
    We have been forced to dodge showers to pick up the litter along our roads, but a lot of progress has been made. I am proud of the effort being put into the project. Anything, including a roadway, looks better when it is clean. It is making a great improvement to the appearance of our county.

    Much to my parents’ pleasure and my personal and professional well being, I am a novice when it comes to methamphetamine labs.
    The same goes for my coworkers, so I am sure we’ve been at least a little amusing for our local law enforcement officials to be around as we covered the most recent busts in the county.

    My least favorite complaint we receive about our paper or media outlets in general is that readers are tired of seeing all of the bad news. Countless times I’ve heard, “All you see in that paper/on that TV station is crime, murder and abuse.”
    Well, please don’t be offended, but if that truly is all you see, you’re simply not looking close enough.

    It’s no secret. The political division in Spencer County is probably at a height that residents have not seen in recent years. And, in some ways, it’s about the drastic change in political ideology that the last local election brought. Ultimately, the voters spoke. Now we are seeing the change unfold.

    What a mess. It is really hard to identify any plausible information in regard to the “alleged” meat packing plant that could be coming to Spencer County that has government meetings and the county abuzz with speculation.

    I’ll focus this week on a few of the disappointments, as I see them, of this legislative session. There were positives, of course: we passed a budget on time; I passed three bills out of the House, and two became law; there were other good things. But work in some areas came up short. These aren’t in any particular order, so here goes.
