  • Tigers outclaw Bears, 29-13

     

    Talk about a rough start. On the first play from scrimmage in the opening game for the Spencer County Bears’ 2016 football season, Bardstown’s quarterback dropped back and lofted a pass that went for a 67-yard touchdown. It was a play that put the Bears behind, where they stayed all night on their way to a disappointing 29-13 loss Saturday night at Nelson County High School.

  • Volleyball team off to 2-0 start

     

    A senior-laden team coming off a trip to the 8th Region tournament last season, has Spencer County High School Volleyball Coach Whitney Reno optimistic about the upcoming season that began last week.

    “We hope to take the culture of winning that we continued developing last year and take it one step further,” she said. “Last year, we took second in the district, and this year we hope to take the Championship.” That could then springboard the team to an even deeper run in the regionals.

    Basketball Camp at CCA

    Cornerstone Christian Academy will be having a four week basketball camp all four Saturdays of September beginning September 3rd.  The camp will be led by Current Cornerstone Christian Academy coach Jason Bradshaw and current college and high school coaches.

    The camp will be held at CCA located at 3850 Frankfort Road in Shelbyville.

    K through 5th grade will meet from 9 a.m. through noon, and 6th grade through 12th grade will be 1 to 4 p.m.  The camp is for both boys and girls.

  • Lady Bears soccer opens with...

     

    The Spencer County Lady Bears got their season off to a good start with an impressive 7-1 victory over Henry County at home last Tuesday. The Lady Bears were scheduled to host CAL on Tuesday and will travel to Marion County next Monday.

  • SCHS Cross Country aiming for...

    The Spencer County High School Cross Country team has hit the ground running this season and hopes to reach new milestones in 2016.

    Last year, the boys qualified for their second consecutive state meet and the girls have a couple of quality runners returning and some promising newcomers.

    SCHS Cross Country Coach Billy Talley assigned sophomore Shaylee Scott with providing the preseason report this year, and she’s one of the new girls who will be lacing up the shoes for the team.

    It’s going to be Bear season in 2016. Following a remarkable 2015 season that saw them post a school record 10 wins and climb to near the top of the state 4A rankings, the Spencer County High School football team has gone from being the hunters to the hunted.

    “I feel we have played the role of underdog very well over the years,” said Head Coach Mike Marksbury, who is entering his sixth season with the Bears. “Now the expectations are going to be heaped on us and we will have to respond.”

  • SCHS golf team now includes 60...

    It may be one of the toughest games to master, but golf seems to be gaining rapidly among the youth in Spencer County judging from the numbers currently involved from local schools.

    Mike Phillips, golf coach at SCHS, is entering his fourth season and remembers that first year when he had six golfers. That grew to eleven the next year and 17 last season. Today, when combining the high school and middle school teams, the program has 60 golfers.
