    Tryouts for the Spencer County Middle School cross country team will be July 30 and 31 and Aug. 1 and 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school track.

    Chris Piercy poses with his big catch, which he caught at the tailwaters on June 30. The fish is a hybrid striper bass and weighed 15 pounds, 34 ounces and was 30 inches long. He caught it with his friend, Diana Hilbert, using her special bait.

  • SPORTS BRIEFS: Basketball camp...

    Cornerstone Christian Academy of Shelbyville will host a girls and boys basketball camp beginning Tuesday, July 31, and ending on Friday, Aug. 3.
    The camp is open to ages first grade through fifth grade from 9 a.m. to noon, and ages sixth grade through 11th grade from 1 to 4 p.m.
    The camp will be led by former Cornerstone Christian Coach Chris Armstrong and current Cornerstone Christian Coach Jason Bradshaw. There will be guest speakers each day. This year’s featured speaker is again former UK Wildcat and Boston Celtics player Rick Robey.

    2012 Spencer County High School graduate Tara Sorrels is pictured with Lady Bears softball coaches Gerald Spencer, left, and Jimmy Thompson at the Eighth Region Banquet. Sorrels was named to the Eighth Region Team for her accomplishments on and off the field.  She was the starting pitcher for the Lady Bears this year with 177 strikeouts. Earlier this year, she was named to the 30th District Tournament team and the Eighth Region Tournament team. Sorrels will attend Western Kentucky University this fall, where she plans to continue in sports by playing on the dodgeball team.

    As we enter July, it’s a slow month for a lot of sports. Baseball fans like myself have plenty to keep us busy each morning, checking out the boxscores and keeping up with the standings, but we’re several weeks from the kickoff of football season and many sports fans don’t know what to do.

    The results came from asking “... which moment each state should be most proud of.” According to ESPN, The Magazine, June 25, 105,000 responded.

    Results from Kentucky: Secretariat winning the 1973 Derby in record-setting time is our proudest moment in sports, 31.8 percent said.
    Runner-up: Muhammad Ali’s Thrilla in Manila title win over Joe Frazier in 1975, 20.8 percent.

  • Baseball champs

    Two Spencer County youth were a part of a championship team in Jeffersontown earlier his month. Hunter Greer, 11, of Taylorsville, and Anthony Lashley, 11, of Elk Creek, were members of the 12U J-town Red Sox. The team won the American League Championship and went on to win the J-town 12U Tournament in Jeffersontown on the weekend of June 18.

  • Bottoms wins second heat race of...

    Spencer Countian Derek Bottoms won his second heat race of the season at Ponderosa Speedway this weekend to start on the front row of the Sportsman feature event. Bottoms was the top qualifier with a 16.845 second lap, then won the heat. The heat race determines starting position in the feature event, so Bottoms started on the inside of the front row. Bottoms battled eventual winner Bartley Grant, and finished second in the feature event. Bottoms currently sits second in points in that series.
