  • Muddy waters can’t...

    Fishing in April is typically feast or famine: Either you can slay the fish because the conditions are perfect, or you won’t be able to buy a bite because of high, muddy, cold water.

    Cold water colored brown by runoff is one of the toughest fishing conditions in spring. Rains that muddy the water improve fishing from mid-February to mid-March because the run-off is usually warmer than the lake’s water. The increase in water temperatures pushes large bass and sunfish into shallow, warmer water.

  • Spencer runners revving up

    The SCHS track team attended their first meets of the season last week, and already have several runners featured in the AA Top 20 rankings.  The Shelby County All-Comers on March 24 was the first meet ever for many newcomers to SCHS Track & Field, including sophomore Erico Smith, who placed 6th in the 100 meter dash and 3rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.09.  Smith is currently ranked 4th in the AA 100 meter rankings and 8th in the 200 meter after his debut performance.

  • UK should deep-six Calipari

    I’ve put off writing this for hours, waiting for an announcement from UK as to who their next coach is. All indications is that by the time this paper goes to print Tuesday night, John Calipari of the Memphis Tigers will be named new head man for the Wildcats.

    Count me among those who are hoping those rumors are (were) wrong.

  • DANCING LIKE STARS

    The Spencer County High School Dance team has managed to accomplish in three years what some more established programs have yet to achieve – the title of national champions. The relatively young team earned their new moniker at Jam Fest Nationals two Saturdays ago in Louisville. The girls beat out 39 other dance teams with their fast-paced, hip-hop routine at the invitation-only event.

    “It’s a big deal to say we’re national champions and not just that we won first place,” said SCHS junior and co-captain Chelsea Livingston.

  • SCES Dance Team ends season on a...

    The SCES dance team has wrapped their 2008-2009 dance season. Recently, the team competed in Jamfest Super National in Cincinnati – where they placed first in their category. Then they went on to participate in March Madness Cheer and Dance, placing first in Youth Hip hop and winning the title of Grand Champions. To earn this title, the team had to place first over every other dance team there (including high school and middle school teams).

    Think high school coaching is little more than drawing up plays on a whiteboard, filling out rosters and running players through drills? Think again.

    Coaches of student-athletes at Spencer County High School were reminded of the enormous responsibilities they have Monday night during the monthly school board meeting, when Myron Thompson, director of risk management for the Kentucky School Boards Association, shared just how liable schools and coaches can be when it comes to dealing with accidents, injuries and deaths.

  • Calipari: Next UK coach

    April in Kentucky. Might as well be 48 hours before the Derby.  Every fan has a pick for Run for the Roses. In this case, next basketball coach at Kentucky.

    In lieu of a John Calipari hiring, which would confirm to some of us that Mitch Barnhart doesn’t get it either, I have a list too.

    Ironically the best man for the job at this point in UK hoops history, won’t get it or likely won’t take it. Billy Donovan will stay at Florida, Tom Izzo is a coaching rarity, a loyalist to Michigan State, and Bob Knight is 69 years old.

  • Time to play ball

    The Spencer County Lady Bears dropped an 8-2 decision to South Oldham Monday in the season opener.

    South Oldham broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases with none out. Kenisha Marshall, playing first base for the Lady Bears, caught a fly ball for the first out, but then a Lady Dragon liner to centerfield brought home the runner from third. Spencer County was able to escape the inning without any more harm, but trailed 1-0.

    See the favorites turn for home. Thinning the pack, West Virginia bumps Pitt, leaving Jamie Dixon’s contender to drop back, wait for another day. Up on the lead UConn and Syracuse exhaust themselves on each other. Between horses and rail Florida State boxes North Carolina in behind the front runners

    Then, as Cawood Ledford used to call, “... and here they come to me now!”
