    Michael Bowman got his first turkey while hunting on the first day of Youth Hunt, April 4th.  The gobbler weighed over 20 lbs and had a 10.5” beard.

  • Lady Bears beat North Oldham

    Spring rains have been the toughest opponent the Lady Bears have faced this early season as wet weather has postponed a number of softball games. But the girls are 1-2 on the season after squeezing in a 4-1 victory over North Oldham in their lone game last week.

    They’ll hope for better weather this week as they were scheduled to travel to Shelby County on Tuesday and to Louisville Holy Cross on Wednesday. This weekend they’ll participate in a tournament at West Jessamine High School and will return home next Tuesday to host Eminence.

  • Bears baseball at 4-4

    The Spencer County Bears baseball team sits at .500 on the season with a 4-4 record after they split a pair of games last week in a schedule shortened by rains.

    On Tuesday, the boys took a 6-0 victory over Louisville Atherton but dropped a 13-4 decision to Gallatin County at home the following day.

    This week, the boys are scheduled to host South Oldham on Friday and then travel to Trimble County on Saturday. They’ll return home for two games early next week, hosting Bardstown on Monday and hosting Shelby County on Tuesday.

  • Elk hunt deadline April 30

    Hunters who dream of harvesting an elk in Kentucky have just a few short weeks left to buy a chance at that opportunity.

    Kentucky’s elk quota hunt application deadline is midnight, April 30. One thousand lucky applicants will be drawn to hunt elk this year.

    Elk lottery applications are available for $10 online at fw.ky.gov, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources’ website. Applications are not sold in stores or through the department’s phone license sales vendor.

  • Youth football and cheerleading...

    Spencer County Youth  Football Association will be hosting the 2009 Spring Football and Cheerleading Camp April 19 and 26 beginning at 2 p.m at the Taylorsville Elementary School field.

    All youth in Spencer County are invited to attend the Spring Football and Cheerleading Camp for the Spencer County Stallions’ upcoming 2009 season.  This event is free to all Spencer County youth.

    There are 4 levels of competition:

    • Mighty Mite age 5-7

    • Pee Wee age 8-9

    • Juniors age 10-11

    • Seniors age 12-13

  • Fox, coyote trafficking arrests

    Kentucky and West Virginia conservation officers arrested six persons, served summonses on two others and seized eight illegally-possessed coyotes today, charging them with at least 831 counts of illegally buying, selling or possessing wild-caught foxes and coyotes, and in one case, cruelty to animals.

  • Bears beat Bullitt Central in...

    The Spencer County Bears baseball team didn’t travel out of state for spring break, but they did hit the field for several games and are now sporting a 3-3 record as they begin a long homestand this week.

    The Bears opened their season with a 7-6 win over Bullitt Central on March 24 then a week later, took a 17-3 decision over Doss at a baseball tournament at Louisville Valley. In that event, they also lost a 2-1 extra inning affair to George Rogers Clark.

  • Kentucky-at-Euclid: Todd and Big...

    John Calipari. Big Blue Nation got its man. The worship service has begun.

    President Lee Todd got his man too and reminded us again about separation of church and State.

    Church is the other side of Euclid Avenue and is tithe-exempt from State.

    Whether Todd sold the University’s academic soul for a ball coach remains to be seen.

    Mitch Barnhart got his man also. A hire that probably saved his job. Yet, his Billy Clyde fiasco should cost him a pay cut.
