  • Bears unable to rocket past...

    For a young team like Spencer County, any confidence builder can be a valuable tool. But last week’s 65-49 loss to Shelby County was enough to give at least a glimmer of hope for Coach Jacob Barmore’s squad as they hit the final stretch of the season before squaring off against those same Shelby County Rockets next Wednesday night in the opener of the District Tournament.

    While the score may indicate a different story, the Bears actually competed well with the Rockets, especially in the second half.

  • 4-H shooting sports

    The Spencer County 4-H Shooting Sports program is having a membership drive meeting Tuesday, February 24 at the extension office at 6:30 p.m.  Anyone interested in shooting sports; shotgun,-archery,-22/air rifle, should come out and sign up.  No experience is necessary to join.

    All coaches are background checked and certified. Coaches will be on hand to help you along with the different areas of interest. There is no cost to become a member of shooting sports.

  • Did Briar Jumpers’ One...

    A mammoth ice storm is history, sun angle has wandered left, daylight arrives early and stays longer, a crappie run is just beyond the Farmer’s Almanac horizon and basketball madness is here.

    Yes, mid-February.

    We thank a couple kids in Kentucky’s heartland, at Somerset in Pulaski County. Ninth - grader D.J. Townsend and tenth- grader David Weigel play for a team called Briar Jumpers in a home gym called the Briar Patch.

    For our state, how perfect.

  • Lady Bears working to get out of...

    The Spencer County Lady Bears have picked a bad time to suffer through a slump, but after losing three straight, and six of their last ten, it’s hard to label this latest stretch anything but.

    The skid started last Friday night on an evening set aside to honor the team’s three seniors – Kenisha Marshall, Shelby Pfeiffer and Lindsey Kempf. All three girls have helped turn the tide of Lady Bears’ basketball around over the past few seasons, but the past week is not how they had hoped to finish up their final campaign.

  • Pfeiffer signs with...

    Friday, January 23rd was a special day in the life of SCHS senior Shelby Pfeiffer. Not only did she help the Lady Bears get a big basketball win over Atherton, and get crowned homecoming queen, but Pfeiffer decided where she would spend the next four years of her life.

    Pfeiffer signed her national letter of intent with NCCAA Mideast coach of the year, Thom Jones and Campbellsville University to play soccer. It was a memorable ceremony as 10 of the 11 returning Lady Tigers were  at the signing to welcome Shelby to the team.

  • Bears win big over Bullitt...

    The Spencer County Bears recovered from a long layoff and a lopsided loss to Anderson County last week to put together their best performance of the season in a 86-81 win at Bullitt Central on Saturday.

    The Bears got balanced scoring and unselfish passing in besting the Cougars in a game that had been postponed due to bad weather a week before.

  • Lady Bears take down Henry...

    It took a little while for the Spencer County Lady Bears to shake off the cobwebs from being off an extended period of time, but they overcame a one-point deficit at the end of one quarter on their way to a 48-34 win at Henry County Friday night.

    Senior Shelby Pfeiffer scored all seven of her points in the opening quarter to keep the early deficit from being greater, and Spencer County’s defense came out and clamped down the Lady Wildcats in the second quarter, holding them to only four points.

  • Lady Bears rout Atherton Rebels...

    The Spencer County Lady Bears have relied on the inside play of Kenisha Marshall for the bulk of their offense over the past couple of seasons, and while her scoring has helped spark their turnaround, some balanced scoring may be what’s needed to take the next step.

    If Friday’s game against Atherton was any indication, the ladies are more than ready.

  • Weather leaves players rusty

    The one opponent no high school team is strong enough to defeat is Old Man Winter, and he’s proven to be pretty dominating the last few weeks, canceling and postponing games from one end of the state to the other. With many sections of Kentucky still out of power, and with some counties (especially in Western Kentucky) receiving grim news that it may be weeks before they’re restored, the final month of the regular season looks like a hectic schedule of make up games.
