A combined team of Spencer County Stallions Mighty Mites and PeeWees competed in the River City Rumble this past weekend at Southern High School. They defeated both the Derby City Cardinals & Valley Vikings. They lost to a team from Indianapolis. Jake Phillips won MVP of both winning games and Kalen Temple received a trophy for Hardest Hit in the Indy game. The team played excellant and shows the talent the PeeWee team will have next season for the Stallions. The team was coached by Mark Huckleberry, Scott Lawson, John Phillips, Stan Shivers and Tommy Shelburne.

Overnight success is a rare occurrence. Instead, reaching a goal takes time and slow, gradual and determined progress. The Spencer County High School football program seems to be a model for that truth as it wrapped up its sixth regular season last week before beginning a playoff run this Friday night.

The program began almost as a novelty. Hundreds of fans showed up for a pre-season scrimmage of the team’s first JV game six years ago. Since then, excitement has never waned and the product on the field has steadily improved.

Another football season goes into the record books for Spencer County as they wrapped up their sixth season. There were highs and there were lows, surprises and disappointments.

High: Football season started with a nice crowd on a nice night and even though the opening game was a loss to 6A Bullitt Central, the Bears showed signs of being very competitive, a trait that would prevail until the final weeks of the season.

The Palmer Road access to the Salt River Bottoms on the Taylorsville Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is now vastly improved because of work recently conducted by the Engineering Division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

“The Engineering Division upgraded Palmer Road to the old River Road along Salt River,” said Bill Mitchell, manager of Taylorsville Lake WMA for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. “They also built a 10-car parking lot at the bottom of the hill near Salt River.”
