    Spencer County Youth Football Association will be having there first open board meeting Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fiscal Court Building downtown Taylorsville. All parents and the community are encouraged to join the meeting to discuss the 2009-2010 season.Board Members for the 2009-2010 season are as follows:

  • Habitat golf scramble

    The fourth annual Spencer County Habitat for Humanity Golf Scramble will be held June 6 at Tanglewood Golf Course. The shotgun start is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with lunch and prizes awarded between 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Entry forms for teams and sponsorships can be found at www.SpencerCountyHFH.com.   • Rain hampers ball games

    The ball fields were quiet the past week as rain washed out the bulk of the schedule for both boys baseball and girls softball at Spencer County High School.

    In the lone game last week, the Bears dropped a 13-3 decision to Kentucky Country Day on the road last Thursday, as their seasonal record fell to 7-10.

    The boys do have a full week scheduled and hopefully the weather will be more cooperative.

  • Derby 135: A blend of Borel, a...

    50-to-1 shot ridden by a little dude from Catahoula, Louisiana, who looks like a hot walker, talks like a cajun and reacted to his double-dip weekend like a kid at Christmas instead of a 43-year-old who’s saddled up for 25 years.

    We loved it too for Calvin Borel. Particularly those few with a ticket on Mine That Bird, $103.20.

    Derby 135 exposed again the experts too. One wrote Mine That Bird would not win because “no horse from New Mexico has ever won the Derby.”

  • All-star status

    Kenisha Marshall ended her Spencer County High School basketball career back in March after she helped lead the Lady Bears to their first regional tournament in several years. But for the six-foot standout center, it was not the last time she’d represent her school on the basketball court.

    Marshall was one of only 32 players from across the state invited to participate in the Kentucky All-Star tryouts, vying for one of 12 spots for the squad that annually takes on the all-stars from Indiana.

  • Saturday’s thunder at...

    The Kentucky Derby. Pageantry and history around Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May has drawn more flowered adjectives and poetic elegance than all other horse races combined.

    Pity the main event lasts half an hour or so.

    This Saturday, 22 contenders will saddle up, stroll from the paddock, hear  call to the post, saunter to the starting gate as we listen to the late Happy Chandler’s favorite song. Then, load ‘em, ring the bell and charge!
