  • GUEST COLUMN: 24 reasons to be...

Theme for Thanksgiving...What one leaves behind is not what is engraved on stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others. – Pericles

Thursday ought be more than feast, family, football (Texas-Texas A&M), a nap and a day’s end whisper “... good to have visitors come, but love to see those tail lights.”

Thanksgiving should range beyond a one-meal prayer on one day and be instead, a season for self-reckoning. Count our kindnesses to others. And if we did them for right reasons.

Basketball season is upon us in Spencer County.

Sure, college teams have been playing for a couple of weeks now, but the local kids hit the court for real beginning next week when the Spencer County Bears and Lady Bears tip off their season.

The teams were introduced to the public Friday night in the annual Blue-White Scrimmage with fans getting a taste of what to expect this year.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Bears will again be a young team and will look to improve on last year’s record that included just five wins.

  • GUEST COLUMN: Top water in late...

Mid November is the time of year when the water temp will dramatically start dropping, getting down into the fifties degree mark. A lot of anglers would never think of using top water. I know from experience that it can really get a lot of bites and some giant bites from some feeding largemouths.

The shad will be shallow and the bass know this. I have had days when I would be fishing a jig, crankbait or a spinnerbait and only be getting a few fish. Then, switching to a top water and fishing the same area, then I would get some of the most aggressive strikes ever.

Michael Vick had the greatest game of his career Monday night in leading his Philadelphia Eagles to a humiliating 59-28 trouncing of the Washington Redskins. Vick threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, ran for over 80 yards and two more touchdowns and basically played the type of game that his athletic ability had long hinted he was capable of.

Cory Kleinjan crossed the finish line of the final race of his high school cross country career Sunday in Lexington. He finished fourth with a time of 16:49 at the AA State Championship.

Kleinjan was approached by several college coaches as they tried to persuade him to run for their respective schools. The Spencer County High School senior, however, has already committed to run for University of the Cumberlands. There, he will join former teammate Chelsey Talley.

  • Central ends Bears' longest...

Spencer County’s final game of the 2010 season ended Friday night with a reminder of what could have been. A big offensive line up front blocking for a senior running back who plowed into the end zone for a touchdown.

However, this score by Kevin Hume came in the closing minute of a 38-10 loss to Louisville Central in the opening round of the playoffs that closed out an 0-11 Bears’ season that started with so much promise but was derailed by key injuries, a brutal schedule and negative momentum that just built up steam with each mounting loss.
