Education - Great time to be a Grizzly at SCMS

-A A +A

On behalf of our Spencer County Middle School faculty and staff, I’d like to welcome everyone to the 2016-2017 school year.  I pray that each of you have had a blessed summer.

I am very proud, both personally and professionally, to be a part of our “Distinguished” school district.  Last year marked the best state test scores in Spencer County Middle School’s history.  The most recent calculations have us among the elite middle schools in the state at 25th out of 334 and a “School of Distinction” status.

Our great success can only be attributed to a special synergy between parents, families, teachers and students; we are truly all on the same team.  At SCMS, our mission is to offer a world class education with a laser-like focus on college and career readiness.

Through our “Chromebooks for Kids” initiative over $100,000 has been invested in new technology for our students, so we can teach how they learn best. At all grade levels, students are taught Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Reading and Leadership.

We are a “Leader in Me” school, meaning that we teach Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” daily.  As you visit our school and attend extra-curricular activities, you will notice our students leading us in all that we do.  We recognize “Leaders of the Week” every Friday and students lead the pledge and morning announcements to start each day.

We offer a various assortment of class electives such as: Technology, Art, Drama, Music, Chorus, Career Explorations, and Spanish.  The Grizzly Academic Team won the District Quick Recall Championship last year and three groups represented SCMS at the National level (Beta, History, and Spelling).

After the regular school day ends, the educational opportunities only continue with our “Grizzlies Beyond the Bell” program.  GBB provides a two hour block Monday through Thursday, which consists of a snack, homework help tutoring, and over two dozen clubs and organizations.

Beyond the Bell offers something for everyone.  Whether you’re interested in Tae-Kwon-Doe, Lego Robotics, Future Health Careers, Engineering, or Photography, we have something for you.  Superintendent Adams even sponsors our weekly Archery Club.

Our Parent, Teacher, Student Organization (PTSO) President Amanda Grubb encourages all parents to get involved at SCMS through PTSO.  You can contact her at amgrubb@forchtbank.com for more information.

Our newly redone school and district website is a great source for back to school information like supply lists, teacher contact information, school breakfast and lunch menus, calendars, etc.

On a more personal note, each week I send out my Principal’s Notes as correspondence to all community stakeholders.  If you would like to receive this mailer, feel free to email me at matt.mercer@spencer.kyschools.us.  Again, welcome to SCMS and the 2016-2017 school year.  Go Grizzlies!

Thanks for all your support and may God Bless you and your families.
