Education - A lifesaving lesson

-A A +A

Most Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know how to administer CPR or they are afraid of hurting the victim. Hands-Only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR for sudden cardiac arrest. It can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival. This past February, during National Heart Month, all of the 5th grade students at Spencer County Elementary School learned and practiced the life saving skills of Hands-Only CPR. After learning to call 911 and begin good quality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of “Staying Alive,”  the students were challenged by their school nurse, Cindy Hayes, RN to go home and teach their family members all of the skills they had learned.
