Love was in the air at the Spencer County Habitat for Humanity Valentine’s Dinner held at the Cooperative Extension office Saturday night.
Over a hundred guests turned out to not only enjoy a wonderful evening, but to support the efforts to continue to build homes for those who are local and needing a helping hand. Along with a great meal that included lasagna and a variety of desserts, guests had an opportunity to learn more about Habitat and bid on their favorite silent auction items.
More than an event, it was the first of three efforts to raise money to sponsor a future home for a special family in our community. Elisa Carrithers, local board secretary, described how it has felt being a part of the organization.
“I always feel elated when we work with a family building their new home,” she said. “Their anticipation is always ten fold because most of them are the first ever in their family to build and own their own home.”
Raising over $3,000 at this year’s event, all the funds raised will help the organization follow its motto by “Offering a Hand Up, not a Handout”, working with families to give them the chance to own their home with a small mortgage.
Becky Culver, family selection chair, expressed her highlight of working with Habitat, saying “My most favorite part is making the phone call to tell a family they have been chosen to receive a new home. They are always overcome with joy in given the chance of a lifetime for many of them.”
