The Magnet wants to hear your voice

-A A +A

Interactive is not a word one often associates with a newspaper. In an age of advanced technology where messages are sent with the click of a mouse or a few taps on your cellphone, the printed word seems a bit archaic and old-fashioned.

In some ways, that’s true. The Spencer Magnet still comes out once a week. The stories, columns and articles you read are not typically typed on a whim and then instantly distributed with the push of a button. Instead, what you read has been the result of reporting, research, proofreading, editing and often rewriting. Yes, we still make mistakes, but we like to think our standards are a bit higher than your typical Facebook post or Twitter message.

But the Magnet wants to be interactive with our readers. That’s why each week, we provide space on this page for readers to weigh in with their opinions through letters to the editor. The Magnet does not desire to be the sole voice of the community, but rather the sounding board for the various and diverse voices of the community to be heard.

The mark of a good community newspaper is one in which an outsider who is passing through, can pick up a copy, and after reading it from cover to cover, has a better understanding of what makes our community tick. The best way for us to accomplish that is to include more of your voices.

That’s why we are always seeking those who would like to submit not just letters, but also various columns. This week, we have a local reader who is going to start submitting a regular geneology column. Each week on our church page, we have a local pastor’s column, and we invite other ministers to submit articles as well.

We frequently run columns from our local extension agents and frequently run historian Tom Watson’s interesting columns about Spencer County’s past. What we desire is to include more voices. We want to hear from you.

Perhaps you have an opinion on what’s happening in local government, or even in Washington, D.C. We want to hear it. Maybe your child’s little baseball team won the league championship, we want to know. Maybe you’ve got an idea for a regular column in our paper. We’re open to your ideas.

The Spencer Magnet desires to be a true forum, filled with the ideas and voices that make this community unique. We want to hear you. If you have an idea for a column or are interested in writing for us, contact our editor at 477-2239 ext. 24, or email him at editor@spencermagnet.com.
