Citizens urged not to give personal information over the phone

Taylorsville Police Chief Toby Lewis contacted the Spencer Magnet on Monday afternoon to help alert citizens of a text message scam making its way around Taylorsville and Spencer County.

Lewis said he received two calls within 10 to 15 minutes reporting a text message claiming to be from Republic Bank. The message alerts of an issue with the customer's account and urges those receiving the message to call a number with a 501 area code immediately.
Upon calling this number, citizens were asked for their credit card number and PIN number.
"Don't give any of that information over the phone," Lewis said. "It is a scam."
A member of the Spencer Magnet staff received a similar text message around 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, but this time the message urged the recipient to call a number with a 314 area code.
Lewis said he has contacted the Secret Service, who will investigate the scam.
To report this or any other scam, contact the Taylorsville Police Department by calling 477-3231.
