For the first time this Christmas, Spencer County will exclusively have a Toys for Tots program that benefits local children.

Spencer County resident Bruce Kapfhammer of Toys for Tots Taylorsville is heading up the collection efforts in conjunction with the Spencer County Family Resource Center and the Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Protection District.

Toys for Tots is a national program sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and benefits the children of less fortunate families whose parents might not have the resources to purchase holiday gifts.

Kapfhammer said Monday that the FRC’s Becky Wilson will be in charge of toy distribution, ensuring that the toys reach the appropriate families.

The TSC fire department’s station 1 on Water Street will be in charge of housing the collected toys until distribution.

There will be a motorcycle and tractor ride fundraiser to benefit Toys for Tots Taylorsville Nov. 7 with a rain date of Nov. 14. Lineup starts at Dairy Queen on Highway 55/155 at 1:15 p.m. with the ride beginning at 2 p.m.

The event will end at Court Square in downtown Taylorsville. All participants are asked to bring an unwrapped toy.

Residents can drop off new, unwrapped toys through mid-December at the fire department’s station 1, The Tea Cup, Dairy Queen, O’Driscoll’s Spirits, L & S Diner, The Family Diner, Elk Creek Dental Care, Barrel Smoked BBQ and Elite Dental.
