    Circuit Court Clerk’s office to close for Labor Day
    The Spencer County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office will be closed Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday. The office will reopen on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.

    Magnet office closed for Labor Day
    The Spencer Magnet office will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day. The office will reopen Tuesday at 9 a.m.
    All advertising deadlines will be at noon Thursday for the Sept. 4 edition.
    News submission deadlines are 5 p.m. Thursday for the Sept. 4 edition.

  • Sasser completes training at Kentucky Dept. of Criminal Justice Training

    Law enforcement officers from 25 agencies across the state graduated Aug. 9 from basic training at the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training.
    Austin Sasser, of the Spencer County Sheriff’s Department, was among those graduates.

  • Jewell earns Governor’s Occupant Protection Award

    The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety honored 140 law enforcement officers from 123 agencies across the Commonwealth earlier this month for their efforts to increase the use of seat belts and child restraints in motor vehicles.
    Lt. Rick Jewell of the Taylorsville Police Department was one of those officers honored.

  • Guthrie to host town hall discussion here next week

    Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) will host a town hall in Spencer County on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at noon at the Spencer County Fiscal Court Building located at 16 E. Main St. in Taylorsville. The town hall will be open to both the general public and the media.
    “It is an honor to represent Kentucky’s Second District and I look forward to hearing what’s on the mind of my fellow Kentuckians,” said Congressman Guthrie. “There are so many issues in the news today and I think it’s important to provide an opportunity to discuss them.”

    Friends of NRA to host banquet
    Five counties will join together Saturday for the Friends of NRA Banquet at the Claudia Sanders Dinner House in Shelbyville.
    Doors open at 5 p.m.
    Tickets are $35 and can be purchased by visiting www.friendsofnra.org.
    Proceeds will go to Kentucky shooting sports programs.

  • COLUMN: UK-WKU Super Bowl is on the horizon

    The Kentucky-Western Kentucky Super Bowl is barely two weeks out and the buzz is like katydids on a heavy afternoon in August: Urgent, persistent and growing louder.
    We like it, this Phase II of Honeymoon Stoops and Petrino. The two-word anthem sprung up to go with the countdown is good, too: “Can’t wait!”

  • Sewing boot camp starts October 10

    The Spencer County Extension Service is offering a sewing boot camp this fall. The camp is a four-week course that requires basic sewing skills.
    The course will be Oct. 10, 17, 24 and 31 and is limited to sewers 18 years and older. The course project includes making an inverted pleat skirt with a two-inch wide exposed elastic waistband.
    Patti Davis and Pat Douglas will be teaching the course.

  • Former Bears star, current Wildcat signs autographs at UK’s Fan Day

    Former Spencer County football star Erico Smith signs fan posters on Friday at UK’s 2013 Fan Day. Smith, a rising sophomore, is currently a safety for UK’s defense and is working toward duties on special teams. Smith graduated from SCHS in 2011.

  • Spencer County Library announces upcoming events

    Check out these upcoming events at the Spencer County Public Library:

    Story time has started back. Join in every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. for stories and activities.  Children work on fine motor skills and have fun while learning.
    Jewelry making for adults is Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m.  The library will have the supplies, you bring the ideas.  Fabric trim jewelry as seen in Martha Stewart Magazine is fashionable and easy to make. 

  • What's Happening — Week of Aug. 14

    Benefit for Annette Whitehouse is Saturday
    An event to benefit Annette Whitehouse, diagnosed in February with stage four squamous cell carcinoma/throat cancer, is planned for Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Spencer County Fairgrounds.
    Admission is $8 for adults; children 10 and under are admitted free.
    The event will feature live bands including, Jared, David Stevens, Phillip Ingram, Carol Ingram, Buddy Stump, the Shane Dawson Band, Jeff Rodgers and Billy Curtsinger.
