  • Board of education sets 2012 meeting dates

    Community members should take notice that the Spencer County Board of Education has voted to change its 2012 regular meeting dates.
    Board meetings are now held on the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m., with the next regularly scheduled meeting planned for Feb. 27 at the Spencer County Middle School media center.
    The board previously met on the fourth Thursday of each month.

    Boy Scout Troops 176 and 465 hosted two foreign exchange students to help them complete their Citizenship in the World merit badge requirements.

    ‘Cindy’ (left) from China and ‘Maprang’ (right) from Thailand are both juniors attending high school in Louisville. They shared stories of their home countries highlighting differences in their education, social pastimes, family life, foods and traditions. The boys really enjoyed learning about the life of teenagers from other countries, Scoutmaster Doug Hayes said.

    The winter homecoming king and queen were crowned at Friday night’s Spencer County High School basketball game. Seniors Patrick Wafford and Morgan Swisher were chosen as the royalty this year.

  • Bullitt, Spencer Red Cross to host Valentine Gala

    The American Red Cross in Bullitt and Spencer counties will host its annual Valentine Gala on Saturday, Feb. 11.
    The 14th annual event at Paroquet Springs Conference Centre will include music by Wulfe Pack.
    Tickets are $50 per person or $100 per couple. A table of eight is available for $400.
    Cocktails begin at 7 p.m. with dinner at 8 p.m. featuring music by Hans Sander.
    The dance runs from 9 p.m. until midnight.

  • PHOTO: Mountain Music Ambassadors to perform free concert at SCMS

    Morehead State University’s Center for Traditional Music presents the Mountain Music Ambassadors on Friday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Spencer County Middle School auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. “Everyone is cordially invited to attend an evening of exciting musical entertainment,” a news release said.

  • PHOTO: King encourages Kentuckians to support breast cancer research

    Rep. Kim King, R-Harrodsburg, encourages Kentucky taxpayers to “check” a box on line 36 when they complete their tax returns this year. By doing so, they will contribute to the Breast Cancer Research and Education Trust Fund to help fund research, education, treatment and screenings throughout the Commonwealth.   • Have ‘Fun With Your Little One’ starting this Friday at the extension office

    Starting this Friday, the Spencer County Family Resource Center and Youth Service Center will be hosting the first “Fun With Your Little One” session at the Spencer County Cooperative Extension Office.
    The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The program is for any parent that has preschool-aged children and is looking for a fun environment for both parent and child.

    Albert Ray Bennett’s carport took the brunt of last Tuesday’s storm.

    His carport was blown over the fence and now rests upside down in his dog pen. Community members Vonda Martin and Diane Watson submitted photos of the carport to The Spencer Magnet. This photo appears courtesy of Watson, who is a neighbor of Bennett and lives on Old Elk Creek Road.
