  • ANNIVERSARY: McKinneys to celebrate 50 year of marriage

    Burnice and Juanita (Thompson) McKinney are celebrating 50 years together. The two were married Aug. 17, 1963. They have three children, Michael McKinney of Bardstown, Lisa Lewis of Jeffersontown and Lori (Steve) Bunch of Cox’s Creek. They also have two grandchildren, Clayton and Kasey Lewis and several fur grandbabies. A celebration will be at Wakefield Baptist Church in Taylorsville on Saturday at 3 p.m. All friends and family are invited.

  • COLUMN: For young and old, let’s learn to recycle

    Our young ones again face the challenges of absorbing all the knowledge necessary to survive in our modern world.
    For us old people, the challenge is finding the way to grab their attention. Today’s world is a very fast-paced, high-charged distracting environment. To make matters worse, new products are brought to market before you have learned to use the item it replaces. That tends to create a “throw-away” society.

    I came into Taylorsville as the new girl, not knowing a soul within Spencer County and having no horse in the constant political race.
    Arriving with a clean slate allowed me to see the county through clear lenses not fogged by family history, personal squabbles or long-standing rumors.

    Former Spencer County football star Erico Smith signs fan posters on Friday at UK’s 2013 Fan Day. Smith, a rising sophomore, is currently a safety for UK’s defense and is working toward duties on special teams. Smith graduated from SCHS in 2011.

  • Spencer County Library announces upcoming events

    Check out these upcoming events at the Spencer County Public Library:

    Story time has started back. Join in every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. for stories and activities.  Children work on fine motor skills and have fun while learning.
    Jewelry making for adults is Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m.  The library will have the supplies, you bring the ideas.  Fabric trim jewelry as seen in Martha Stewart Magazine is fashionable and easy to make. 

  • What's Happening — Week of Aug. 14

    Benefit for Annette Whitehouse is Saturday
    An event to benefit Annette Whitehouse, diagnosed in February with stage four squamous cell carcinoma/throat cancer, is planned for Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Spencer County Fairgrounds.
    Admission is $8 for adults; children 10 and under are admitted free.
    The event will feature live bands including, Jared, David Stevens, Phillip Ingram, Carol Ingram, Buddy Stump, the Shane Dawson Band, Jeff Rodgers and Billy Curtsinger.

    Some will say it even smelled like football season on that day in 2003 when Spencer County High School took the field in pads for the first time since World War II. It may not have looked much like a typical high school football game: no Friday night lights, no permanent bleachers and no press box.

    A Louisville man was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital Sunday after crashing his motorcycle.

    A Taylorsville Police officer was arrested early Saturday morning after bringing out a gun after a verbal altercation with his wife.

    Since the current Spencer County Fiscal Court was seated in January 2011, the makeup of the court has been predominantly Republican — until now.
