  • COLUMN: A new season and a new...

High school football pulls back the curtain this week on another academic year. The usual fixtures are in place – Louisville Trinity and Fort Thomas Highlands.
For the rest of the year, these are a few things I would like to see come to pass:
    1. My favorite for Kentucky sports person of the year has been established: Emma Talley. A 19-year-old from Princeton in Caldwell County and a sophomore at Alabama, Talley won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship. Two Kentuckians won major tournaments this year, Talley and Kenny Perry of Franklin.

On Saturday, the Stallions hosted the Bulldogs for three games of fast football action.

  • Bears fall in scrimmage, prepare...

Spencer County Bears Head Coach Mike Marksbury and his staff went into last Friday’s scrimmage with Nelson County not concerned with the final score, but saw it as an opportunity to get several of his younger players some much-needed experience.

  • 1st & 10

Some will say it even smelled like football season on that day in 2003 when Spencer County High School took the field in pads for the first time since World War II. It may not have looked much like a typical high school football game: no Friday night lights, no permanent bleachers and no press box.

    Sporting clays event
Ducks Unlimited will host its Summer Sporting Clays Classic on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 9 a.m. at the Merwin Ray Shooting Range in Eminence.
The event style is similar to a golf scramble, but on a shooting clays course.
Prizes will be awarded and an entry fee of $100 is required. The fee includes 18 stations with four targets per station and lunch.

  • Fall squirrel season opens Aug....

Kentucky’s fall squirrel season is a 196-day split season that kicks off the calendar of fall hunting.
The first segment of the fall squirrel season opens Aug. 17 and the season closes on Nov. 8.  The season opens again Nov. 11 and runs through Feb. 28, 2014.
The daily bag limit is six squirrels.
